Hi, Sorry know people are probably sick of looking at J1 questions but I could really do with some advice.

I'm planning on going on a J1 this summer, thinking of either San Diego or New York. I'm 18 and going by myself. So basically looking for any helpful advice anyone has to offer - finding somewhere to live? any tips on going on your own, or anyones experience of going alone?

    Thanks in advance!

I know a few people who have gone alone and have said it is the best experience ever. You have no one to wait on so can really do what you want to do. I don't think it would be hard to find accommodation since people often rent out big houses and look for people to share with to make the rent cheaper. Look at USIT's facebook page(Go4Less and SAYIT's facebook pages aren't really that active but could be worth a look) and here http://www.j1forum.com/ for people looking to share accommodation. Good Luck

I would suggest going where ever you can get work. Check out craigslist.org or the local Irish centers in the different cities, in major cities there are always some. San Diego has Irish Outreach and New York has the New York Irish Center. If you get in touch with them early enough you might be able to get some work lined up. Once you have that the hard part is over.

Hey, thanks for all the replies & advice!

Have decided on San Diego, seems the best option for fun & chances to travel around the place! Hoping to stop in NYC & Chicago with the 2 free stop-overs that are being offered.. then onto San Diego for most of the summer.. that way would be right beside Mexico and not too far from LA & Vegas.. expensive business but with a bit of luck will get a job & it will all work out! :D
