Joe Rogan: Yay or Nay?

So, there seems to be a lot of hate for Joe Rogan on the boards here.

Are you a fan of his? Or don't you like him? And if you don't like him, why?

I personally really like him. I think he's very knowledgable about Martial Arts, he's a really good Play by Play commentator and analyst, and i think he's entertaining.

If you look at the likes of SF and WEC (past tense), i think he's head and shoulders above those guys. Listening to Mauro, Shamrock and co. makes me wanna tear my face off!

So for me it's a "Yay". How about you?

Joe Rogan is a LEGEND!!!! He knows so much about the game and is very well respected by many of the top fighters that go to him for advice example GSP, i not a fan of his comedy but fight wise he knows his stuff, Goldberg now i dont like!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,615 ✭✭✭Hail 2 Da Thief

I think he does a good job. He's not reading from a script, it's a tough job.
I agree with you about Mauro, he's awfull. For a guy who's been involved in MMA for a long time he still seems to know sweet fa about fighting.
I like Shamrock though, I think he's pretty good!

    tooler7 wrote: »

What did GSP go to him for advice about?

I like him. I prefer Bas and Mauro though. Mauro knows even less about MMA than Goldie! :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,323 ✭✭✭✭MrStuffins

I love Bas! Bas is the balls.

But Mauro, sweet Jesus! I hate the way he tries to make everything sound like a lesson in English liturature!

When the next SF rolls around, notice how he is GUARENTEED to call the first round of every fight "the opening stanza":mad::mad:

This is my favourite commentary ever - check out how Mauro and Bas are laughing their asses off as they try to describe Datsik's unique moves, e.g. "the rear mount" at 5min40. :D

If you haven't seen this fight before, watch it - amazing ending!

I like Rogan in his role but I think they need a well spoken, knowledgable fighter in there with him. Like a Rutten or Couture. Goldberg does the presenting stuff very well is is a good announcer, but knows little about the goings on in the cage.

I think the over use of Goldberg brings down the overall production values of the UFC's events, as he's just too ever present througout - between his announcing duties to the VOs on the VTs and promos.

I'd keep the team as is but bring in another guy who has fought before and knows exactly what the guys in the Octogon are going through.

I'd love to see the UFC change up the look of their productions too, it's gotten very stale and samey.

I do wonder if they will ever bring back Randy for main events like they used to do until he briefly left the company.

Joe's a legend, good commentator and a funny bastard

Shame he thinks the moon landing were a hoax...

What did GSP go to him for advice about?

A spinning side kick he recently said it to Dana White i think it was in one of his blogs.

Its Yay for me I am a fan of his.

Bas and the Fight Professor were the greatest however.

How can you not like Joe Rogan, the man single handedly brought back the fanny pack.

Rogan is head and shoulders above the competition.

Would like to see Florian or Couture back in as the third man, or replacing Goldie.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 105 ✭✭tooler7

i wouldnt mind seeing Kenny at all as a third man. On mma live on espn he talks very well and obv being a current top ufc fighter knows his stuff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,323 ✭✭✭✭MrStuffins

I like the fact that there's only 2 guys though. I like how it is now.

What we don't need is when there's 4 of them like on SF!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 282 ✭✭Kettle316

    Yay from me!!

He is a walking encyclopaedia on MMA and is able to break down situations and really explain what exactly is going on, especially when the fight hits the ground!!

Him and Goldie work very well off each other aswell!!

Wouldn't mind seeing Randy, Kenny or Frank Mir added to the team just to get a fighters point of view of the fight aswell!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 344 ✭✭DJKendo

    He is brilliant

How biased he is to BJJ is a bit irritating but he's ok!

Goldie, get rid and bring in Bas!!

I think people are always a little biased towards their base art to be fair. Where I find he is biased is when calling fights that involve 10th Planet students.

I personally like Rogan, he always has a lot of energy and he tries to explain the grappling, which is a productive way to deal with the "stop hugging and fight" brigade!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,615 ✭✭✭✭DrPhilG

I like Rogan, but he's a walking advertisement for 10th Planet JJ.

He constantly throws in all these whacky Eddie Bravo terms like Mission Control, Crackhead Control etc. Does Bravo pay for the advertising? :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 826 ✭✭✭Jason McCabe

I like Bravo but I agree with the 10th planet references. Everything on the ground seems to be setting up omaplatas or gogoplatas that never happen.

My favourite was the woman on the Japanese version of Pride who used to scream the whole time.

I never was mad on Quadros but enjoyed Bas and his constant talk of liver kicks.

Mauro is just irratating in the extreme.

Goldie is a brain dead. Beem wtaching the sport for years at rngside and is still clueless.

I much rather listen to Joe Rogan than the advertising goldberg beside him to be honest.
I read up alot on nlp and i see/hear Goldberg using this when he speaks.
So i figure Rogan does the actual commentating and Goldberg must be there for the sponsers and advertisers to keep everything plugged between the action.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,932 ✭✭✭YouSavedMyLife

A yay for Rogan from me. Hes a funny guy and knows all the in's and out's of the game. Goldberg has a more of a presenter feel to him, but overall i think thy fit well together. All time fav is Bas and that other dude from pride the fight professor, dont know his actual name though. Thing is could you imagine if you got Rogan and Bas to commentate, (is that a word? ha) they would clash so much i think. You need someone knowledgeable about the sport and do a play by play like Rogan and then someone to say stupid **** like, Atlethic, unorthadox, heavy hands, and do the advertising plugs and stuff. Thats where Goldie comes in :p

Believe it or not I have done some commentating for TV/Radio and it works just yousavedmylife posted up above.

Its typically one serious expert and one goofy/light-hearted guy. The reason is that the non-expert can ask the expert the sort of questions people want to ask but might be reluctant to show ignorance of the sport to their mates and also to draw in the not so hard-core viewers and make them feel like they are being included and not shut out by a wall of acronyms and esoterica.

So non-expert goes "whats he doing there??!" expect can reply "Well thats a rear naked choke, he'll be looking to get his legs in to stretch his opponent out, often called "hooks"". Then when the fighters actually do that, you'll hear them say "look there he goes, look!"... reinforcing what they have explained.

This explains the situation to the newcomer fans but also it is a lot more reasonable than listening to just the expert "lecture" you directly from the telly.

yay for me aswell, as someone who is a fan and who doesnt fight i really like the way he explains everything and knows what the fighter should do to get out of submissions or how to get back to there feet, joe rogan has thought me nearly everything i know about mma:)

Agree with your take on what the partnership is but only experienced fans realise this as Goldie certainly does not, he does not ask anything and just makes stupid comments all the time and thinks he knows what he is talking about, Rogan regularly contradicts him so if anything this would do the opposite to new fans as he is patronising to Goldberg and therefore to beginner fans..

Goldberg is a waste of time in my opinion and does nothing that can not be done by a knowledgable person.

I love Rogan. Im not a seasoned participator or viewer of MMA and he explains a lot of whats going on. Another thing is that him and Goldberg dont have an intense style of commentary which is good when you watch live events. At 3-6 in the morning its good to have all the action plus a few moments where they take the piss out of someone or something.

I personally really like Mike Goldberg and Joe Rogan together but they are missing someone and I think that person is Randy Couture, these three together were great during the spell of about a year until Randy returned to fighting. I'm not mad about Florian or Bonnar though.

Goldberg's pimping of chocolate bars and beers are getting ridiculous at this stage. At the last event there was one of the fights, where both fighters went at it from the get go and he was waffling on about something or other. wanted rogan to tell him to shut up (may have been the bjp-hughes fight, not sure)

I really enjoy Rogan's commentary though so thats a yay from me

hahaha, the plugs CAN get a bit ridiculous but that's his job i guess. UFC have sponsors, sponsors who pay big money to have Goldberg read out their slogan or whatever during a fight!

I personally Goldberg, he's completely clueless and without Rogan i don't think i could bear him, but they're good together!

Exactly. Take out Goldie and put in Bas or anyone else, you'll still have either Rogan or whoever is with him throwing in the sponsor names.

At the UFC 95 Fight Club Q&A, someone asked Goldie the most ridiculous slogan he's been asked to announce. He said there were too many to list, but the funniest experience he had was in Dublin before 93. Someone stopped him on the street and asked, "Hey Goldie, what's the difference"? Goldie didn't know what he was on about and the guy asked a few more times. Goldie eventually said he didn't know and the smart arse replied in his best Goldie advertising voice...

    "The difference... is drinkability"!

I think Rogan is a big factor in the success of the UFC, he's a very good communicator and his colour commentary is a kind of MMA 101 for new fans without being too patronising to established fans.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 437 ✭✭MonkeyBalls

Joe gets a big thumbs up from me. He's one of the best assets the UFC has - very knowledgeable, honest, clued-in, enthusiastic, excellent communicator, and just a cool guy all round.

People who accuse him of being "extremely biased" are retarded. He's human and if he were more objective he'd be a robot. He's allowed to have a couple of favourite fighters.

He does an excellent job, consistently.

    Goldy on the other hand....well...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,961 ✭✭✭✭mailburner

    yah for rogan
    he is near irreplaceable imo
he's funny and has such a great knowledge
    of the game.
speaks his mind also when dodgy decisions are made
which is what people want to hear like myself when
my double went down on machida recently

florian isn't too bad when he's commentating but
when he has to do rogans job interviewing a fighter
after a win, he's useless and doesn't ask the questions
    people want to hear.
He's just a bit dull really imo

frank mir did a wec a while back and i thought he was super,
equally as knowledgeable as joe, did a great job commentating
and was equally good at interview fighters afterwards
I think mir and rogan would be a great combo

As for strikeforce... as long as mauro isn't commentating
im fine with it, find pat miletich very good and shamrock ok
but after watching tuf finale first and then strikeforce
i found by the time i got to the lawler fight i just had to
    mute it with mauro commentating

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,512 ✭✭✭Oh_Noes

Big Nay from me. Can't stand the way he constantly goes on about what the fighters should be doing. He's becoming a bit too much like Jimmy Hill. I think Pat Miletich does a very good job. Kenny Florian is good too and I think he's first on their list if Rogan is unavailable.
