Just wondering if I am the only one fed up with there not being a 24 hour Irish news channel?

Today, there are momentous decisions been taking about the future of this country that is developing by the hour, and what do we get from RTE?

Nothing but the nornal scheduled bulletins.

I find it frustratiing to have to depend on Sky to find out what is happening here.

Isn't it time that there was an Irish news channel and wouldn't it be financially viable?

The fact people living in Ireland have to tune in to Sky News or BBC to listen to Cowen's upcoming address to the nation is nothing short of a disgrace.

Is that not just a repeated loop of previous news broadcast rather than a live broadcast?

Hell no, the licence fee is high enough as it is!

RTE provides an excellent news service and will cover the story in depth at 9.

A lot of people will be annoyed if Fair City is interrupted.

That's my point....have a separate channel like BBC do.

Wouldn't affect licence fee if done properly as a financially independent entity.

Not everything RTE does is funded by licence fee...eg 2FM

And what good would it be the 360 odd other days that **** all happens?

BBC News Channel gets it's funding from their licence fee.

If there was money to be made on an Irish news channel, someone would have set one up by now.

Well in the last week alone has been dominated by the bailout but there has also been the tragic deaths in Ballycotton & Newcastlewest, launch of terminal 2, redundacies deadline in HSE then add news from around the world.

Think there is plenty of news to warrant a channel just the finances is the major issue.

Even so, I still think the situation today warrants more than scheduled bulletins from RTE and programmes should be interrupted for pending live press conference from government buildings that's about to be shown on Sky News!

For what it was worth :(.

They cut back to the studio again as soon as Vincent Browne stood up to ask some real questions.

At least Sky News kept their coverage going and we got to hear Browne laying into The Taoiseach with the type of questions the RTÉ wouldn't dream of asking.

After todays almighty failure I don't think I could trust them to cover what needs to be coverd at any given moment. Any strong democracy should have a live channel overing the affairs of state - be it debate in the Dail, committees, international news feeds or a bunch of middle aged middle class white blokes having an argument round a desk.

They don't need a new channel. If something happens just stick live coverage on RTE News Now. I wonder who would want to endure RTE's biased coverage all day anyway.
