If you don't have a paypal account, you have nothing to worry about.

I'd ignore it. This is their mistake, and you don't need to spend any time or money contacting them to inform them of it.

Keep any letters you receive as reference though.

Paypal don't give credit - you could'nt owe them money.

Paypal deduct their fees from your lodgements

If you sell an item, withdraw the money, then the buyer wins a dispute and is refunded from your PP account, leaving your account negative. Hence you could owe PP money and they will chase you for it.

However in the case of the OP, it could have been a case of a scammer stealing their login details

Write to them and send the letter by registered post - copy the letter to Instrum Justitia.

In the letter tell them very simply without using any angry terms that you have never opened a paypal account and that you have never sold the goods they are claiming.

Ask them to provide any documentation they have in relation to the matter in order for you to hand over to the gardai as you believe it to be a case of identity fraud.

When the info is sent, bring it to your local gardai and give them a statement.

Using f words or getting angry will not sort out the problem in any way whatsoever and may get the opposite reaction to what you are looking for.

But the OP never even had a Paypal account, so that can't be.

Good to hear that your story had a happy ending. I've bought loads of items using PayPal without any problems. It's very safe for buying so there's no need to be afraid. It's when you're selling that you need to be very careful.

If you check 'message details' in your e mail account, you will find out, that none of those mails was sent by PayPal.

But if you want to report stuff like that, PayPal have a section called 'Spoof' ;)
