I ordered a few bits & pieces from Amazon in US & iv heard a lot of stories that customs in Ireland are stopping a lot of parcel deliveries if they are subject to excise duty. In my case a lot of duty
Im just wondering if all parcels are stopped
I have googled this query already but couldn't find the answer i needed.

    Any answered kindly appreciated. :)

I think it depends on the shipping method. If it's shipped by certain couriers they will make it their business to make sure anything that should come to the attention of the customs authorities will do so. If it's shipped by US post office then there's a chance it will be overlooked and get through without being checked.

However in my experience amazon.com will often ship things in a box with amazon emblazoned on every side of it. Packages obviously coming from shops will be most likely noticed and stopped I'd say. If I was you I'd be preparing to pay up just in case. :(

Yes, you will almost certainly have to pay duty on goods imported from the USA - the chances of a parcel slipping through unnoticed are next to nil.

Be prepared to pay approx 21% of the purchase price plus P&P.

Be prepared to also pay duty of maybe 6% and a handling charge.

If it's an expensive shipment, then you're pretty much guaranteed it will be applied. Duty, VAT and handling fee.

Almost certainly, they have tightened up 99% and are even stopping small parcels from arriving without proof of purchase, by those I also mean under the import limit.

Expect to pay approx 30% on you invoice, it should be a little less but budget for that and get the cash ready. You'll need to convert that into a Postal Order and give to customs.

amazon usa is a bit differant

everyone above is right, usually everything thats above the threshold value is stopped and vat/duty applied with a handling charge by courier companys

however some stuff like the amazon kindle purchased from amazon usa has the import dutys built into the price you pay thru amazon.us and thus comes in with no charges

So when you buy from Amazon USA they add on Irish VAT? Don't think so.

This is true when you buy products that are part of Amazon Global Program. It can be found here : http://www.amazon.com/b?ie=UTF8&node=230659011
I don't think it includes all books and cds etc.

Here is the part about Import Fees :
    Import Fees Deposit
The Amazon Global Program offers customers a unique service: duty and tax estimation during checkout and customs clearance on your behalf for certain eligible countries. When products are shipped to the eligible countries using eligible ship options included in the Amazon Global Program, an Import Fees Deposit will be estimated and collected for the shipment. With your authorization, such funds will be used by the carrier or another agent to pay the Import Fees on behalf of you (or the recipient's behalf) to the appropriate authorities of the destination country (See detail below).

Read below for the answers to further questions about the Import Fees Deposit and applicable Terms and Conditions.

I ordered some beauty stuff from the u.s. which cost $144 and was asked for 27e which included a handling charge. So it looks like they are stopping a lot of stuff, I am looking at it as my part of bailing out the lad in Kildare Street.

Hi guys, I know its an old threat but couldn't find anything on the subject.

on the 18th of May - is there any number or place I could call to check for it in Dublin?

This is crazy two pieces of windscreens for zoom coming from hawaii and already its taking nearly 3 months - cannot locate this anywhere.

    thanks for any possible replies

    Hi there

Customs are gone so strict now , i got a gift got 44 pounds and was chaeged 18 .50 on it

Its not worth people buyingh you presents , if only you could reject them .

see this link , you will be charged duty on every parcel ,- it seems to be a certainty now .

companies should pack all items in separate packages so you are always under the limit and label them gift , evern when they are a gift they are not labelled gift !

be wary when you order online and always use the excise calculator to ensure its worth your while , free trade , i dont think so

Correct. there is no duty or vat payable on shipments from within the EU

Many ebay.ie and ebay.co.uk sellers will be sending you stuff from outside the EU, I guess some third party amazon sellers might too. Many falsely pose as UK/EU sellers too.

Excise products are always liable, even within the EU, like perfume.

buying bamboo organic bed cover in US ,this item is not available in Europe and because it is organic and not manufactured anywhere here made specially for organic latex bed is duty payable on it ths

Since customs don't charge tax on packages from within the EU, do they check the package at all? Or does it just go straight through, undisturbed

They can and do check stuff at random, but it's more likely to be if the shipment is flagged due to various things, ie originating from certain countries or going to certain addresses, or named individuals etc.
