i am in a timber frame house, plumbed mainly with plastic pipe,

3 zones, upstairs, downstairs and hot water cylinder.

i am asking if anyone can let me know if i can add a log burning with a back boiler, even if only to heat the hot water or upstairs?

Unless there was an allowance for solid fuel in the original installtion you are looking for a major rework.

#1 Open Vented System required ( small tank in attic)
If you have a sealed system (red expansion vessel and pressure gauge mains top-up) this need to be converted to an open vented system.

    # 2 Twin coil Cylinder and pump required.
This takes heating source from either Oil/Gas boiler or the Solid fuel stove.
Additional pump to reject stove heat around rads.

    #3 Stove pipework.
Flow and return pipework needs to run from stove to hot water cylinder (Hot press).

    #4 Existing heating pipework mods.
Depending on how pipework is run through/ in your house it may need to be changes to allow the stove to heat all the rads.

    #5 Controls Electrics and Stats.
Modification of existing controls and new controls for stove will be required.

    #6 Chimney/ Flue/ Hearth.
Is a flue liner require or modification to existing chimney.
Hearth/ base for solid fuel stove.

    #7 Builders/ carpentry works.
Opening up service routes and making good. Mods to hot press etc.

    #7 Type of stove.
Add to above cost of stove...

Not a quick or cheap cost but definetly worth doing in certain situations.
get quotes and ideas from various plumbers/ heating engineers.

i am aware that there is a bit of work involved but my main concern is the plastic piping.

i thought there was something that you couldn't use plastic pipe on a solid fuel system as there is no way of regulating the maximum temperature.

my current system is a pressurised. i wasn't aware that it had to be vented

i currently have a single coil cylinder. could i not just add a hot tube to take one of the sources.

sorry this is so long winded,

1" Copper piping to and from Stove top hot water cylinder.
You are correct, this is due to high temperature and more risk of failure of plastic pipe.
The rest of plastic pipe in system is ok.

Open vented system is for safety and the stove circuit has to work on gravity feed.

Hot water cylinder does need to be changed. Two coils needed.
1st for stove ( gravity fed).
    2nd for Pressurised Heating system.

Note: Some plumbers may suggest a system link manifold to join the Stove and the main heating source and then connect it to the single coil cylinder.... IMO it's not the best way of doing it.
Also this would involve additional pumps ans controls.

Also What is your main heating source. Is it gas or oil and what is the make and model of the boiler. Sometimes the boiler manufacturer may not recommend it for an open vented system (due to internal pressure switch and controls).
