Emm..... Are you a bit slow or are you viewing the site on a device which doesnt support flash so you couldnt view the video ???
The guy went to the bother of posting a video of his engine running, making a knocking noise (possibly tappets) and you rely with that. The car isnt moving and the nose is there so its not the cv joints (unless there is another noise when the car is moving)

Sounds serious ... big end bearings maybe ??

    What's the car ?

    02 focus

Doesn't sound good, i'd bring it to a local mechanic, at least its the

tappets(which can be adjusted). Worse case rings, pistons or bearing

    damage causing the noise.

How is the car running apart from the noise, is it burning oil, or costing more on petrol.

Has the car been serviced recently? If it wasn't I'd at least change the oil. Will tell you how low it was, and you'll know how much oil is in it.

Is that not what the dip stick is for ?

It seemed to be ok up till today when it start knocking i just pulled over and got it towed home by a tow truck i toped it up with oil and the car moves just moved it a bit in the garden but the knocking is very bad i was told if i thicken the oil it might get rid of some of the noise

That's very heavy oil consumption. Add to that any type of unusual noise and I'd recommend getting a secondhand engine fitted. A 02 Focus is well worth saving if in good condition otherwise.

Sounds like something more serious than thicker oil is needed.

Bit harsh... It was only a question and was posted right away so maybe the video wasn't uploaded at that stage.

At a guess I'd say theres a broken valve or 2 mate. Timing may have slipped causing the pistons to crash into the valves.

    Hey look...1000 posts! :)

Yes, but sometimes they are difficult to read. Mine is a bugger to read. You pull it out and it's clear near the top of the two levels, then a bit of oil above it etc.

Anyway, that engine sounds like a bag of hammers.

The was the best post so far.
It's burning oil so get a mechanic to look at it, if it's going to cost say 600 euro to take the engine out and stripped to fix it, then you can get a new engine fitted for say 1000 euro. I had a Ford Sierra once and one piston went in the engine. Replacement Ford engine saved me a lot of money and heartache.

1000 is a bit steep to change the engine, i had a 99 focus in 04 and changed the engine after the big end bearings went in it, the engine cost me 500 and i changed it myself

Yeah you changed it yourself - not everyone has the space or tools to do that so 1000 euro with labour is realistic , no ?

with this type of sound/vibration and the lack of oil on the dip stick, would point directly to the big end bearing,
one other point might the guy who serviced it forgot to refill the oil, bearing in mind that you later put six litres in it.

i still dont think 500 is ok just to change an engine but whenya break it all down like a new timing belt, new oil, filters and plugs. i suppose getting it done for 900 all in ya would be doing well

Ive been priceing around and i have only been able to get a price of around what it will cost for an engine fited from a breakers about 1000 fited

Now here is the thing i need to change my car any way but was hopeing to use the money from this car to buy an other one as iu need a desial do 800 + miles per week and the petrol is burning a hole in my pocket so is it worth puting 1000 in to it the car has ran out of nct and the tax is out at the end of this month

If there was a way of fiting a desial engine to the car it would be great but i dont see that happening

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,396 ✭✭✭✭Timmaay

Hmm that changes a good few things, its certainly worth getting a diesel as it will save you about a 1000 in fuel cost per year if you are doing 800miles a wk. If you think the focus needs a few other things for the nct, and it has high milage already then its hard to know if its worth spending a grand on an engine now only to have to throw more money at it to get it through the nct.

But 1st things 1st, you have got a mechanic to diagnosis that it needs a new engine, and its not something simple?

My Mam's Focus had a similar problem, it sounded the tiniest bit rough for a little while. You really had to listen to notice it, everything thing esle seemed fine. After a while, the engine warning light came on so she stopped driving. Checked the oil and it was low, compared to an adequate level a short time before.

The problem turned out to be the piston rings, which had to be replaced - a very expensive job.
