Retcons in comic books are almost an accepted evil, but retconning Doctor Who? That’s exactly what the BBC has done, and worse yet it retcons out something established by the Fourth Doctor; Tom Baker. Back in the 70s, the Tom Baker Doctor established that the Doctor can only regenerate 12 times, which means whoever would’ve been cast as the Doctor after Matt Smith would be the last Doctor Who ever. But now, that’s no longer the case.

The BBC has confirmed via the Guardian in the UK that Doctor Who is now immortal. He can regenerate as many times as he wants. Worse yet, the retcon is being made as an off-hand comment in the Doctor Who spin-off The Sarah Jane Adventures, and it will air in the UK via a two part episode on the 25th and 26th of October. Since that show doesn’t air on BBC America, we’ll have to wait until it hits DVD/BluRay to see it.

Ah a milestone... your 17,000th post is an admission of stupidity. :)

I'll move this to the DW&T forum.

    13 lives, 12 regenerations. Noob :P

Can't say I'm surprised. Disappointed that it seems to be done outside of the show's narrative, but did anyone really think they'd end the show after 13 Doctors?

Give the phenonenal writing that has been created for the last two doctors and potentially more to come it seems like stupidity suicide to stop at 12. An arbitary number that I'm sure no thought they would get anywhere near!

Tom baker was 1974 to 1981. Who can predict over 30 years in the future that the show would still be going? A time lord maybe......

Would you write this in today? no...
