    Hi

I have a 01 avensis d4d, that when its started first most mornings, there can be a whining sound from it for first few minutes,

When this noise happens and I am driving , if I put car into neutral, noise stops straight away.

Also when the noise happens if lights are on, notice they getting a lot dimmer when noise is happening, this is lights on dash, and also headlights.

    Any ideas

Have been told my fanbelts etc are not loose

    Thanks for your time

    Sounds like an alternator issue.

You haven't had to have it jumper have you?

    no

Year ago, battery went in it and had it replaced
    But starting fine since then

If it is alternator, I can get that replaced cheap enough i think?

I would suggest getting the belts checked. They can whine when they age. It could be that the alternator is slipping a bit causing the whine and the dimming of the lights. It is also possible that the bearings are beginning to go on the alternator and are causing the belt to slip as they tighten on the alternator shaft.

Your mechanic should easily be able to check both.
