Now pigiron is always a fine reason, but meat and poison and all that.
I will offer that Weezer without doubt write the worst lyrics of any band, not just indie ones.
Even Pinkerton-era?That's some damn fine songwriting.

I quite like Two Gallants. Maybe not the best but very underrated imho, their whole wild west theme is class and they're beautifully written.

Lyrically there's few artists can match the social commentary of Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip

I like that album but lyrically it's not worthy.

When I think of great lyricists I think of Richie Edwards, Kurt Cobain, Nick Cave etc. Not Rivers Cuomo.

Lyrics about Holocaust, Suicide, Murder and eh... Japanese fan girls.

    Okkervil River
    The Hold Steady

Both are bands moreso than just being a songwriter with a backing band, imo. As lyricists, Will Sheff and Craig Finn are way out in front of all other comers, imo.

The Hold Steady without a shadow of a doubt. Craig Finn is brilliant with wordplay and internal rhyming as well as putting humour and sincerity into their songs.

Surprised a thread about lyrical bands has gone four pages without a mention of Elbow.

I personally think Guy Garvey writes some of the most beautiful lyrics in music today.

Have to agree here. Surprised no one has mentioned The National also. Thought there was some great stuff in the last album.

Brian Kelly has a great sense of humour in his lyrics alright.

Bit hit and miss for me. He gets far too preachy at points. Some stuff is very good though.
I'd also agree, the National, fantastic lyrics.

Elbow, Radiohead, Jamie T and the Pacemakers (ok perhaps this is only one person), Eels, Arctic Monkeys, the National, Everything Everything (sort of)

Not one of their best lyrics but 'Postcards From A Young Man' by The Manics contains the line 'I'll send you postcards every single day just to prove I still exist'.

Really poignant when taken in then context of the story of the band/Richey etc, but also appealing to me in terms of other personal stuff . Always makes me sad when I hear it :(
