i was working a late shift and was closing up the till like every other person around me , at the same time i had to train a staff member how to do this also , whilst we were counting the till some guy came out of nowhere and snatched the bag of cash that was counted this was when the door was about to be shut. we shouted for security but they couldnt hear us they were looking after another door , so i had to run to him and tell him , he didnt know what was going on , at our door there is no security, what so ever for the whole day no i feel a sense of great guilt for not stopping the robber and doing something more i was wondering should i quit, and legally can my boss take the amount stolen out of my wages , which is a lot .

Did you fail to follow protocol?

Are there proper procedures in the workplace on counting money, security, responsibilties. Are they clearly available to employees and have you been properly trained.

This is a classic employment issue and despite you feeling guilty it may very well not be your fault at all under employment law. Obviously you should have thrown a can of beans at him or something.

Jobs are hard to come by and i am sure the shop is insured. Maybe jsut fell like a bollox for a while and then forget about it.

Why would you feel guilt its the company's fault if there security is lacking and they are to tight to upgrade it, for sure do not quit stand tough and if anything is said to you tell the bosses that you had everything on your side in place, do not be scared what they say as long as you and the person you were training are able to confirm the same story there is nothing they can do.

He may not have followed protocol.
How was the thief able to grab the bag so easily?
Why was the thief even in the shop during money counting?
Had the manager informed the security he was going to start counting money?
Why was the office not used?
Was the counter locked before hand?

I wouldn't be so quick to be defensive. There is a possibility that this was franchise with well established and clear security measures that are not very tolerant of these type of mistakes. If this is a franchise and this happens alot then you would quickly have a business hemoraging money. It is not a question of telling a or keeping to a story. It is more likely there are a set of rules that anticipate every security contingency and therefore must be followed in order for to keep **** away from the premises.

yes it was the exact same procedure as every other night . where our department is situated is pretty close to the front door . and there is a blind spot behind us , it was so quick all we saw was a hand grabbing the bag of money because he came from around that area, its hard to describe the layout but behind us is a display area . and beside the till are the steps so customers can come in or out. now i do understand everyones opinion here and this is a lessen learnt . the floor seemed relatively empty , it was like this guy knew when and what time the cashing up was done perhaps i should have been more careful, but we have been asking for a security guard to be placed at a our door numerous times and nothing .

I would not feel guilty is I was you. What if you did do more? If you went after him you could've been beaten, stabbed or shot. And for what? Someone else's money? **** that.

From the sounds of it that guy had your work place well sussed out and chances are he's better at committing robberies than you are at preventing them.

Hard lesson learned. It appears your store has not listened to your concerns and has not set better protocol for cashing up. It really doesn't sound like your fault.

Obviously it's not going to happen again. So it could have been foreseen and prevented. I am qualified as a security manager and i would foreseen such an event happening and would have had a different set up.

There have to be stricter rules for cashing up. It probably is not your fault and likely your employer did not work with you on security so this is what happens.
