    An Irish Type of Music
    By Dermot McGuinne
Dr McGuinne will present an illustrated talk on the subject of the use of irish character types for printing lyric song words for Irish music. Set in the context of a general historical overview of music printing, evidence will be presented of a particular typeface, heretofore uncommented upon, that was used exclusively for this purpose.
Dr Dermot McGuinne gained his primary degree and early experience as a graphic designer in the United States where he later held the position of Art Director of the University of Iowa Press for a number of years before returning to Ireland. He was awarded his doctorate from Trinity College Dublin for work completed on the subject of the “Irish Character in Print” and is author of various articles on this topic including the recently re-published ‘Irish Type Design’. In the past he held the positions of Head of Department of Visual Communication and of Fine Art at the Dublin Institute of Technology.
