The Box it comes in would be more powerful.

    Operating System Windows CE 5.0
    That'd be a no then.
There really should be a new name invented for these sub-netbook quality thingies. For now the word junk will suffice!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,823 ✭✭✭neacy69

absolute rubbish....a PAYG phone for the price can do a lot more!

edit: make that for for less than that price!

Don't bother......especially if you have any aspirations to view Flash on it.

These 7" netbooks are churned out by factories in China. Some, like this one, have Windows 5CE embedded on them. This makes changing the OS quite difficult.

I would imagine that you could pick one of these up on eBay for €50 or so, especially with WinCE5 on it.......if you have money to waste then fire away.

I'd say my casio has more power then it!

In fairness though, it is a netbook in the strictest definition because it pretty much can only surf the web.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,177 ✭✭✭oneweb

My Cray Jaguar would have more power than that!

    It is what it's.

So crap that even with linux it would fail?

With Linux on it at least you could view Flash based websites.

I've been trying to find advice on flashing a Netbook similar to this for ages. The BIOS will not allow booting from external storage so changing the OS is not as easy as it could be. It has to be flashed onto the NAND drive and you need a ROM that is specific to the processor.

Ah, I see you've discovered the Notbook.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,158 ✭✭✭donmeister

Arnotts would have to give me €99 to use it, and even then I'd be hesitant!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,371 ✭✭✭acquiescefc

    Should be called a Notbook

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 509 ✭✭✭redalan

Is it really that bad, even for the folks who are not tech savvy but first time users?

With Linux on it you could do quite a lot, and €99 is a good price for the components in there.

    Windows CE? Why?

My 8 year old got it as a present so I'm not too bothered.

With any flavour of Linux on it at least it would be usable. The problem is getting Linux onto the damned thing.

With WinCE5 it's close to useless and it's far from easy to improve.

Why WinCE5? Because these generic 7" paperweights are churned out of Chinese factories who simply pop in chips with the OS embedded on them already.

Some of the newer ones have WinCE6, not that that's much better.

    Why go for this?

You can get an Android tablet with android 2.1 etc etc for about the same or a wee bit more at www.lightinthebox.com/wholesale-Laptops--Notebooks_c1386 and they deliver to Ireland....

It is really as bad as people have described it. It is NOT a netbook. It's a pda with a keyboard. And for 99 quid it is a complete rip off. You'd buy a second hand real netbook for that much.

It can browse the internet but it would do it terribly.

So would it do an eight year old? I don't want him to have a phone yet...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 50 ✭✭beaniebarbeque

They had these for 59 euro some months ago. Still not cheap enough to tempt me, but better than 99 quid

I like craptop myself, though that tends to refer to a laptop that has seen better days rather than one designed and built to be dire from the off.

Not if your eight year old is anything like my eight year old.

No Flash support means no Club Penguin, amongst other sites.

Oh right, still nothing to be happy about.

    Let me rephrase:
128MB ram? I have more in my pocket calculator :D

It would put them off laptops

I would not even recommend it to be given to a primary school child to use as a first laptop, even if you had money to burn.

It's like a stripped down version of windows 98
Except it won't run any programs that can run on windows 98
It will only run programs recompiled for windows CE
It will only run windows CE programs written for ARM processors

It will only run windows CE programs written for ARM processors, and at this stage most of the developers of free software have moved on to other platforms so there is very little quality software and a lot of half developed abandonware. Yes you can buy stuff, but what defeats the purpose, yes you can get java etc. but at this stage you could probably run java on your microwave oven / car's engine management system / dvd player

You'd probably be better off buying a bluetooth keyboard,a 4GB micro SD card and a A5 Fresnel magnifier and connecting to your mobile phone.

Has anyone worked out if the CE is embedded? It might at least be fun to boot into DSL or something if possible.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 383 ✭✭Svetti Arss

I wanted to play this on it but it the Arrnotts salesperson said it want powerful enough.

Don't say the word embedded, people might think it's embedded windows which is a different product with license costs 10-20 times higher (because it's 10-20 times more usable)

    http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2004/jun04/06-28derivativespr.mspx
Windows CE Core license, with an estimated retail price of $3,

So microsoft themselves reckoned the license was worth $3,
    retail,
in a press release designed to big it up,
    back in 2004

Why bother buying rubbish like that?

    https://www.vodafone.ie/df/shop/DirectViewBuy.shtml;jsessionid=BVb9MhqbGsRwX441J3jhNxmLGZmj8kXHfC1prnxgp3RYGyxhR0Jy!1971967773!635203581?handsetselected=387045&offerSelected=prepayporting&action=view

A €59 phone would wipe the floor with it.

WiFi, 3G, GPS and touchscreen and 256MB RAM. Shame about the small screen though.

Just googled the machine there and found This. Simple stuff for a "first time user" to go through alrite to upgrade the firmware (A necessity apparently if you want the thing to actually save certain stuff on turning off), lol

Just in case anyone still thinks this is in any way functional

    from the manual http://www.shomar.ie/index.php?page=otic-netbook-user-manual
3 X USB Port, with USB 1.1 specification at speed up to 12Mbps.
Note: These USB Ports support Keyboards and Mice etc. but don’t support USB Memory Sticks, Hard Drives, Optical Drives or Printers.

The only programs that will run on your Mini notebook are those designed specifically for MS Windows CE 5.0 running on the ARM processor.
You cannot run programs designed for Windows 2000 / XP / Vista or other Windows Mobile platforms like Pocket PC or Windows Mobile 6.
you can't even run programs written for windows CE 5.0 for other processors , cba figuring out if you could run ARM specific programs for other versions of windows CE

With a real netbook you could run almost any program that was written for almost any PC , from the 1980's to the lifespan of the netbook and for any current PC OS not just windows or a specific version
