What's the purpose of this poll? Would you not just be better off asking what people recommend pre-workout? (same with the post workout thread you started....)

Strong coffee and wine gums. Preferably Maynards Winegums. Superior in every way to NO Explode.

With such a very narrow range of options, you are likely to get a lot of "others".

Bout 50 mins before training 400mg of caffeine, 30 mins before 30g of whey and 50g of glucose

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 418 ✭✭Mauricmo

Surely creatine should be one of the options?
I would say that is a big part of the "other" vote.....................along with wine gums apparantly:confused:

Monster Kaos and a packet of skittles!

1g Arginine, 500mg Tyrosine, Lucozade Sport 30 mins before.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 722 ✭✭✭Rycn

Whoever I quoted changed their post while I was writing this but here it is anyway:

Creatine improves your overall performance with a cycle of usage, it's most beneficial post-workout, apparently.

It doesn't improve that specific workout you do if you take it before.

That's why I see no point in these "monster pump 2000" supplements, they're full of shite imo.

Caffeine's been doing the trick for me lately. You'd want 300mg or more for noticeable effects though, I find.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,341 ✭✭✭El Horseboxo

I usually just use Maltodextrin before and during the workout. Mix it with water. It's cheap for a big bag and lasts for ages. In the beginning it helped a lot with energy levels and i guess it still helps.

When people say caffine, are you wasting your money on pills/powder, or just hasing some strong coffee?

    From wikipedia:
An acute overdose of caffeine usually in excess of about 300mg, dependent on body weight and level of caffeine tolerance, can result in a state of central nervous system over-stimulation called caffeine intoxication. The symptoms of caffeine intoxication are not unlike overdoses of other stimulants. It may include restlessness, fidgetiness, nervousness, excitement, euphoria, insomnia, flushing of the face, increased urination, gastrointestinal disturbance, muscle twitching, a rambling flow of thought and speech, irritability, irregular or rapid heart beat, and psychomotor agitation. In cases of much larger overdoses, mania, depression, lapses in judgment, disorientation, disinhibition, delusions, hallucinations, and psychosis may occur, and rhabdomyolysis (breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue) can be provoked. Extreme overdose can result in death.
    Good luck with that

I read somewhere a long time ago that coffee's not as good for some reason. Not sure if that's rubbish or not though. It set off my science alarm.

Porridge & Fruit mix, Protein shake, 'Pulse' and Creatine.

To be honest the Pulse stuff isn't great. Probably a waste of money. I'm just using it up for the sake of it at this stage.

Interesting to see people saying taking Creatine before the gym isn't especially beneficial, I always thought it was :o I do understand it's only effective when used consistently in a cycle but I thought you'd feel it's effects more directly if you took it 30mins before workout. Oops

I don't like the taste of coffee. I also like to be able to take my caffeine around in something tiny that won't spill and be able to swallow 300mg of it in 2 seconds flat.
Never mind the actual price per g of powder versus cups of the drink, do you really think I'm wasting my money?

Caffeine tablets are 8.49 sterling for 200 200mg tablets. Each tablet is about 2.5 average cups of coffee so this works out at about 2 cents per cup of coffee's worth of caffeine.

Therefore, the caffeine tablets do appear to work out cheaper. However, I get free coffee at work so I think I'll use that for now until I feel that I need a pre-workout supplement.

Nice condescending post there. "Caffeine intoxication" is exactly what people are trying to achieve.

And good work on using wikipedia as some sort of reference. I'm tempted to just edit the page so that 40,000kg becomes an overdose amount.

    I know nothing about caffeine.

When it was suggested by your man, I googled what the amounts needed would be. When I seen 300mg and the word "intoxication" in the same sentence the bells went off.

Would you not be alarmed if a suggested dosage of a stimulant you knew nothing about was being recommended in "intoxicating" doses?

Bear in mind the word intoxication means poison to me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 890 ✭✭✭dartstothesea

Ah yeah, just bear in mind the word intoxication means immortality to me.
Nothing on that list of symptoms worries me except muscle tissue breakdown, anyway. Well, maybe death, but mostly muscle breakdown.

Brillant I'll start selling in nightclubs from next weekend :D

3 boiled eggs and cup of strong coffee seams to do the trick to me

Jelly beans & starbucks christmas blend!

Good point. I used to eat jelly babies and fig rolls when I was bigger into the cycling. Mainly to give a boost towards the end of a 3 hour + cycle. Never thought of carrying that over to the gym.

Because it's a lower dose of caffeine than you get from tablets?

It is tastier and better for washing down winegums though.

If the prices above are what you pay then no, I've only ever seen them a much more expensive, granted they were being marketed as fat-burning-boosters etc

how'd you mean, Bit in bold below?

Definition: Food consumed 30 min to immediately prior to training.

Goal: Ensure that that blood glucose levels are all optimal with a view to maximising performance. Optimal hydration levels are also key. Take home point for all...consuming protein at this time is better than consuming it post workout with regard to driving protein synthesis.

Exceptions: You will see people crapping on about this consuming carbs prior to training crashing blood sugar...only one paper has ever found this that I know of and I've another bundle that didn't...from personal experience I've never found this to be a problem with athletes either.
On another note...related about what we were talking about previously...there are studies where consuming BCAA at this time actually harmed performance...just for the pill poppers out there...BCAA are fine...but I wouldn't be taking them immediately prior to training.

Content: This is a great time for some plain whey and some fast acting carbohydrate...I say this because I know people like protein shakes...if you are going to use them...now would be a good time 30g of whey protein and 30g of carbohydrate...a scoop of whey in your Club Energise perhaps.

So once again for the nerds...if you are an endurance athlete...0.25g/kg of protein and 1g/kg of carbohydrate...for strength/power athletes...0.5g/kg of protein and the same of carbohydrate.

Also, I don't see any reference to crashing blood sugar in the single sentence that Hanley posted.

Well you reposted a whole section of a post in bold.
And that was about crashing blood sugar or rather the myth propagated about such.

So it would be entirely natural to assume that that is what you were getting at.
