The 2011 Welsh Open will be played with a new format. All matches up until the last 16 will be 7 frames long instead of 9. The shortened matches will be played without an interval. The advantage being that the shorter matches will allow them to be played on 2 tables instead of 3 so the BBC will have the potential to show live coverage of all of the play on BBC Wales.

What are your thoughts on the the new format? I'm in favour, the changes aren't too drastic and will benefit fans who want to watch matches that wouldn't otherwise be televised.

Off all the ranking tournaments this was the one event that needed a change the most.Since it was moved from Cardiff to Newport it has fallen down the pecking order of favourite tournaments by most of the players. The ranking points on offer are fewer than the othe ranking events and although BBC Wales and Eurosport provide television coverage the venue in Newport isn't great.Personally I think it should be moved back to Cardiff, it was a better venue, easier to get to and being in a bigger city attracted bigger audiences.

Regarding the format change, I think it's a great move, best of seven matches don't have the dreaded mid session interval, which means more matches can be easily scheduled, the audience are kept entertained and I think encourages a better standard of play.

The World Open replaced the Grand Prix and although it's matches were only the best of five it proved very popular with the players and viewers.Add that to the two table set up instead of three and you have the makings of a great event.

In the meantime I'm off to Prague tonight with Ken Doherty for the final EPTC event, a good run for Ken might just see him make it to the Grand Finals next March.

Best of luck to Ken, would love to see him hit top form again. I always found him to be one of the most exciting players to watch - even if he was 7/8 frames down you could never rule out a comeback :)
