Am I missing something glaringly obvious, or is there just not a feature to shoot in black and white on the 550D?

    Thanks so much.

Should be under picture styles in the menu. I don't have a 550D, but that's where it is on my 5DmkII.

I'm sure it'll be under Picture Styles probably called Monochrome, theres others called Standard, Portrait, Faithful etc.

It's in 'Picturesyles'. Switch your mode dial to P, AV, or TV. Press the 'Picturesyles' button (directly underneath the 'Set' button) and scroll your wheel to 'Monochrome'.

You can access it through 'Menu' button also.

Additionally, if you then use 'Live Mode' your viewing screen will be in mono.

Why would anyone want to shoot in B&W mode?

Much superior B&W results can be obtained by post processing the colour image (especially by using Channel Mixer in Photoshop).

In addition, by shooting in colour, you have the creative option of choosing to process some shots in colour and others in B&W. As we all know, there are some images that will work well in monochrome but not in colour and vice versa.

Why would anyone want to limit themselves to B&W only?

Shoot RAW and you have both options.
