Replacement iPhone

Lost my iPhone 3G a couple of months back and am now in a position to replace it. Before losing the 3G phone I did a full backup on iTunes of all my contacts etc.

If I hook up a new iPhone will I be able to sync my contacts from iTunes? I tried it with my iPod Touch but it failed miserably.

I'm not great on things Apple so if it's a stupid question - please forgive me!

You should be able to. When you do a restore it asks if you want to start as a new phone, or restore from backup at which stage you should restore from the backup you want.
