Does anyone remember the practise of scutting, for those that don't know it, it involved hanging on to the back of a truck/trailer or even the engine grille on the back of a bus!
This came up in conversation with a few friends and we were surprised how many did it, it wasn't unusual to miss the set of traffic lights were one wanted to alight and end up miles from home, I didn't try it myself as I was terrified I'd be spotted by my parents, the thoughts of the danger in it never came into play.

Yeah I remember it. Looking back it was a lethal practice.
I was a bit of a wuss though. Only ever done it on the back of the milk mans electric float:)

Doing with your roller-skates on was the best.

I never knew there was a name for the practice.

When I was about 14-15 in school there was an Educational day out where two science class teachers decided to make us
cycle a few miles out to the Local Water recycle plant.
We got up to all sorts including catching hold of various parts
of a moving tractor  At the time we thought it was a laugh now I think back in horror! and wonder how Teachers were even allowed to bring a 60 Kids out cycling on a main road.

A lad I worked with before told me a story once about when his friends are young they used to wait for a train to slow down at level crossings and catch a ride......until one of his buddies got part of his toe (or toes) sliced off catching his show/sneaker under a train wheel.

They used to do it on trains up my way..it was a way of getting from one station to another usually by standing on the bumpers between carraiges..incredibly dangerous and occasionaly somebody got badly hurt.

me and the mate used to do it with those road sweepers with the yellow flat tubes hanging out the back.
we done it one day we were just out of school for lunch and decided on hitching a lift:rolleyes:.any he was on one side and i was on the other and everything was going to plan except his tube came loose and he fell off hit the road and was unconscious and nearly run over be a following car.

as it turned out it was pretty dangerous and he ended up in hospital and i got the rest of the day off.

    yea i don't recommend it.
    kids say no.;)
