    Hi All
    Can you put a storage container in your garden ? (it is behind the house, and not visible from road) and use it to store scaffold/building materials ? There are already garage and shed in the garden so Class 3 would not apply. One person in coco said this is ok but before I complain I'd like to know which part of Regs covers this.
    Many Thanks

    There is nothing in the regs to cover it, imo. If your exempted limit is used up you will not be able to do as you say legally unless the container is on a trailer and attached to a usable truck.

    Are you suggesting;

    a) A container for permanant storage, trade materials etc
    or
    b) A container to store materials while an extension or other works is going on?

    a) Requires planning if you extension limit is used up. To be clear, the presence of a shed doesn't means clss 3 can't apply. You can have multiple garages/sheds under exempt development, as long as the total all sheds is under 25.

    b) If temporary, it is exempt under class 17

    Just to clarify, this is only valid in connection with a development.

    Thanks for help-Class 3 will be the one the Co will probably examine it under, the houses are new on large sites with garages detached, unfortunately the neighbour has placed the container directly opposite the kitchen window of my friends house, she will have to go route of formal complaint. I will try and attach photo just to show you. Attachment not found.

    The council don't examine it under any classes, if it meets the citeris for class 17, its exempt.
    you didn't answer my question either,
    a)Size of existing shed/garages, and
    b)It there current construction going on. Extension to house, finalising main house etc

    House is complete some years now, no building work going on. Existing garage would be large, don't know measurements, there is another shed now at end of garden which was placed there after house building complete. Guess it well over allowed area. Container has scaffolding on top of it and owner says he is storing the container in his garden because he has no where else to keep it. Thanks for help. As i said my friend has been told if she wishes to complain that the Co will look at the dimension of structures (Class 3)and external finish not compatible with existing house. Sorry for confusion.

    That container needs planning permission, especially if has been there for more than 9 months. Finishes not in keeping with the house and is obviously being used for non domestic use.
