They tested the filters on a MHRV system, there were clogged with spores, as they filters hadnt being changed in a year. The manufacturers recommened for ireland every 3months!. Most suppliers will say 1 year. I have priced the filters for one system when I was considering the appliance. 2 filters 80 euro. This is something I believe needs to be budgeted in the yearly cost of running one of these devices.

Thats a good point if the filters are not cleanable.
Mine are made of polyester filter material on a wire frame.
I soak them in a detergent solution and rinse them off with a hose, this removes all the insects and grease.
I then give them a quick soak in a dilute bleach solution to kill anything else.
Of course you could always buy new ones but if you don't mind a bit of work...

I inspect them regularly, if they look particularly dirty I wash them otherwise its 3 mths.
The local farmer was spreading lime in the dry weather a month ago and I had to wash them after that! They were just covered in lime dust.
I think it's a very good argument to have an easily accessible HRV unit. You need to see them, not just on a scheduled basis.

Can you PM me the make of HRV you have CJ. Thanks.

Right now,if I was putting one in, this would be a deal breaker for me, if we couldnt wash the filters ourselves. With the way this country is going, I am thinking replacing HRV filters is going to be a luxury...and well be back to sick house syndrome discussions again.

Some of the filters have a 'cardboard' housing so cannot be easily cleaned.

But obviousl, the most expensive route is going to be buying the filters from the MHRV company.

Get the size required and just buy 10 at a time from the likes of Radionics or Farnell or similar for a lot cheaper...

    They are standard enough filters...

    Mike.

Something that should be considered when choosing a unit
