€98 for a full service & they'll replace any part required. Seems fairly expensive.

Does anybody know if those places would fix a blocked brewing unit, if its something that requires a professional to fix or whether I could do it myself ?

if you're handy with a spanner there is a good guide here:

i did it at the weekend as it happens - usually do it every year or two. I just did the shower plate. My Gaggia is 4 years old now and still pumping good as new.

How about that? So did I! I always take off the shower plate and the first part of the brew group: that's easy! but I've never taken out and disassembled the orifice housing. Maybe next time. I'm in Dun Laoghaire and the water is very soft, so limescale is not a problem but you do get a buildup of coffee oils which taints the flavour of your brew, so a good scrub in coffee detergent (Cafiza/PulyCaff) is what you need. I do have a few Gaggia descaling sachets and I'd say once a year is plenty in the Dublin area. In limy parts of the country (and you'll know if this is you from whether you get lime accumulating in your kettle) you'll need to do it much more often.

I did the Gaggia class out in Watermark during the summer and David showed us some scary examples of petrified boilers, so it's serious, it could wreck your machine!

Got bored tonight and had another look. The Classic doesn't have this housing at all. All you can remove is the plate in behind the shower screen. Seems to be an Evolution only part.

That would account for why I've never taken it out! BTW, did you look at the other posts on that blog you linked to? Lots of Bible Study and Creation "Science"! Still, useful Gaggia Evolution disassembly pictures.
