I brought home a car from the UK well over a year ago. I worked there for the previous 3 years and had the car in my posession for more than 6 months before I came home.
I have had the car parked up on private property and has not been driven on Irish roads since I brought it home. I now have the money to get it back on the road and am wondering if I will be still able to register the car on Irish plates and avoid paying VRT.
I had a look through the regulations and cant find any info relating to this, I know that a car is supposed to be VRT'd within seven days but the car was on private property and not driven on Irish roads, has anyone any idea where I stand please?

Back a year ago when you imported the car, it was supposed to be VRT'd within one business day :)

If I were you, I'd bring the car, all proof you have of buying it and importing it and of living in the UK to the NCT centre (that's where cars are VRT'd these days) and I'd say you have a good chance of importing it for free (you did qualify for all the right reasons a year ago after all)

Good luck and let us know how you're getting on!

I moved from UK to Ireland in June 2007 but didn't register my car until December 2007. When I registered my car I simply explained that I moved to Ireland as a temporary resident and therefore did not need to VRT my car. I drove it on UK plates.

The day after I decided to make Ireland my permanent place of residence then I registered my car and the customs office had no problem with this.

Maybe you could try the same approach

Hey guys thanks for the help. I've made a few calls and looks like ill have to pay VRT. If the car is in the country more than a year you have to pay it.
basically if you cant prove its been insured in the UK in the last year
    that you've been resident there
    had bills there etc

Its only worth about 800 euros.

hardly worth my while VRT'ing it and getting it nct'd and taxed eh

Its a 96 Rover 200 with less than 60,000 on the clock, I'm the 4th owner.
It has service history and never gave any trouble. Its in the same nick at that one in the picture.
Would 800 euros be about right?

Without VRT and NCT in this country, the car is worthless. Best sell it back in the UK or maybe sell it here for parts? The minimum VRT on any car is €720 BTW...

I had a quick search on the VRT calculator and it is telling me 480 euros, is there other charges aswell?

Any one got an idea what the tax on this 1.4 engine would be too please?

Oddly enough the VRT on that, according to ROS, is €560.

Still very high for that particular car (sorry OP, but even mint they don't make much here).

OP; if you do decide to put it back on the road make sure you get it checked out. 12 months sitting unmoved means that there could be a lot of bits sticking.

Thanks for the info guys. Ah its hardly worth putting back on the road when I could buy one with similar mileage and year for nearly what the vrt alone would cost.
Bringing it back to the UK is not a viable option either. So it looks like selling it for parts/ to a scrapper is the best bet.
Any idea how much would I be looking at getting? and would I be better off putting it up on Done Deal or calling a few scrap yards?
