Handing in My Notice after Contract Expiry

My contract has expired since last Sept with my company. I've been offered another one but I haven't signed it and wish to hand in my notice. My previous contract said I must give the company 2 month's notice, but since i haven't signed the new one does this mean i can leave with a shorter notice period!? Thanks in advance…
