Hi, i am starting a new build in the new year, am going for a highly insulated spec, sealed system with HRV etc. However the only stipulation that my better half has is she wants an open fire. I know that passive houses and open fires never the twain shall meet but its that or divorce. The wife said she doesn't mind an insert with doors as long as the can be used in the open position (and closed when fire isnot in use or when she leaves the room!). So what i am looking for is an insert that is externally air fed thatcan be used with the door open or closed. The only system that does this i found is the phenix green insert by bodart and gonay but from what i can make out the are v expensive (>6000) with alot of automated parts and stuff. So does any one know of a simpler insert that would work?
Failing that i am planning using a standard insert that has double doors i can open using an external air source with a manual dampner and putting a manual dampner on the flue to balance the air demand, has any one used designed this type of system?
(PS i know that stoves/ closed door systems are more efficient but she wants what she wants.)

I was met with a simlar challenge from 'Herself' last year. I managed to change her mind. Totally pointless going to the trouble of having an airtight construction and then sticking a large hole in the wall in order to avail of a poorly efficient source of heat. Do what I did and tell her to start living in the 21st century! It's very frustrating when they just don't get it.
