Computer Monitors for DJing/Production

A lot of the guys here seem quite tech-savvy, perhaps the type with some amazing dual screen computer set-up, so I thought I'd ask here.

Thinking of buying a monitor for DJing and Production, currently on a 13" 1280 x 800 Macbook, which is quite small for both Ableton and Traktor.

Any advice on what size/resolution you'd need minimum, or who makes good monitors etc?

You dont really need a decent spec monitor for production to be honest, any production software has no need for high refresh rates or high pixel ratio.

The only thing I will suggest is size, get as big a monitor as you can afford...the bigger the screen the more workspace you have.

You really cant go wrong with any of the Samsung Syncmasters though....great screen and pretty cheap too.

This one is decent specced and a great price for a 22".

Yeah I know I don't need huge resolution, it's more size, but I don't want to downgrade from this resolution wise at least.

Cheers, that looks good, is that the standard price for that kind of monitor?

I use a 13' macbook and Ableton routed into Traktor simultaneously in full screen mode using Screen switching in Spaces!

I Also set up some buttons on my controller for switching between display modes in Traktor :) ..

A second 15' at the same resolution would be nice though without being too hard on the eyes..and not too big to lug around for gigging though...the DVI connector will cost probably half what the monitor will which is a royal pain in the butt.

    Couldn't agree more!

You should look up the max resolution your graphics card can handle though, as you may lose quality if you're driving something with a larger res.
You will be surprised though as when shopping for a Monitor/TV (Syncmaster btw!) I discovered that my 15" MacBook Pro will drive a 30" Monitor,
while still making use of the MBP's own screen.

Would be interested to hear how it works out so keep us updated!

REally? I thought it was only the 17" models that could do that properly (although this was about 3 years ago so I'd say the 15 inchers are able to do that now).
I run a 20" Apple Cinema Display with my mbp, and all it really does is make my mbp screen look like crap. I know the ADC's are known for their colour etc., but the difference is shocking. Gorgeous, overpriced as feck monitor

Just to let you know, dual display setups are becoming the norm now. Amazing now means Eyefinity.

    My personal setup is a Dell ST2210 1920x1080 22" 5ms Dynamic + Dell Piece of sh1t 19" 1280x(unknown, its a weird aspect ratio).

People slate dell, as do I, but I like their screens. Not claiming they are the best but dont write them off.

IMO, you'd be crazy not to buy 1920x1080. A 1680 has 85% of the pixels of a 1920(true HD) but will be practically the same price or fractionally cheaper. 1600px is fine for a 15", for a 22" not so much.

Remember to add the cost of a display adaptor(DVI) for your mac.

Finally, DO NOT order from Komplett. Dont beleive me, just ask on Building and Upgrading.

Yeah, checked the specs for my "Mid 2009 MacBook Pro" on the apple site...
Dual display and video mirroring: Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to 2560 by 1600 pixels on an external display, both at millions of colors

    Technology, eh?
