    Hi...

    Hopefully someone can help
My daughter bought an acoustic guitar a while ago and has had some lessons.

The head of the socket thing ( sorry..dont know what its called ) at bottom of one of the strings has broken and i cant remove the old socket.

Do I just drill it out or is there an easier way?
Ther seems to be a wirerunning through it but not enough to get a grip with a pliers

If drilling is the answer would the wire make it more difficult?

    Thanks in advance

Im guessing your talking about the bridge pin that holds the string into the guitar. THe easiest way to do it is slacken off the strings and get your hand into the sound hole if you can. You should be able to push the pin up from inside. It may be a little stiff but thats the best way. You might find it easier using a 2 euro coin or a handle of a screw driver to push it because they can be a bit tough.

If the guitar came with a peg winder, then on the handle of the winder there should be a semi circle cut into the handle which you can wedge under the head of the pin giving you enough grip to pull it out

Thanks Damon, she has the peg winder allright, but problem is the head is broken off the pin.

Will do as 68 above says as should get it out that way.

    Thanks anyway

Whereabouts are you based? Someone on the forum may be able to help in person if you've no luck.

Just to show you a better idea of what Im talking about, this image is what the bridge looks like underneath and you are going to try and push the pin out, you will see the ball ends in the picture which are the end of the strings and the plastic which is the bridge pin. Just make sure you are pushin the pin and not the cross beams which you can also see in the picture and dont hammer them as you could damage the top or the bracing.

Thanks 68...I get exactly what to do now...just one thing...the ball at end of string will still be there as I saw a bit of string at top of pin when head was off it.

Will this pull easily by hand or will I have probs do you think

    Thanks again

When you take the bridge pin out the hole that is there is design to allow the ball end through. If the string is broken then the ball end will probably fall into the guitar and you can pick it out.

The way the mechanism works for changing the strings it the ball end goes through the hole and then the bridge pin fills the hold and stops the ball from coming back through. There is a ridge in the bridge pin to allow a channel for ths string to pass through but not big enough to allow the ball to come though. So once the pin is out you will have no problems. You should be able to pick up a new pin for about 50c and a new string for a euro, or a set for 6. I generally change all 6 at once if they have been on there a while. Its up to you though.

Thanks 68...simple as pie...got the old pin and ball out.

Gonna pick up new pins and set of strings today.

Daughter has a stringer and now that we see how it works should be simple

    Thanks again
