Raymond murphy 'English Grammar in Use'
intermediate to upper intermediate (but could do for beginners with a bit of adaptation)..

Most of the student textbooks (with listening/writing/reading/activities rather than 'pure' grammar) also cover the grammar in the appropriate order... 'cutting edge' is the best i reckon

I think the grammar books are a great reference for yourself to brush up on the facts before you go, but I wouldnt bother bringing a pile of books with you. I have done ESL teaching abroad and have always ended up using the local books and making my own stuff. The explainations in Murphys book were too complex for my students. Check out the amazing resources online mes, bogglesworld, british council. Save your baggage allowance for clothes and shoes!
