Acoustic Guitar - advantage of DI and preamp?

    Hi all,

I play in a small acoustic covers band.

I have a Martin D41 with an under saddle pickup.

I always just plug directly into a Dynacord deck, no pedals or anything.

I've been looking around online ...I found an LR Baggs Venue pedal.

This is a built in preamp and DI box.

Could someone tell me is it worth using a preamp/DI box when playing live.

Will it improve the sound if I go through one of these, as opposed to plugging straight in?

Best thing to do is go down to a shop and see the difference between using a DI and plugging straight in. You should find that you get a clearrer signal using the D.I. and that the sound quality will be improved. Guitars worrk a high impedance and most desks are designed to take a line level in at low impedence and the DI box will use a transformer to match the impedence. It can also give you a signal boost if it is needed and remove any problomatic ground loops. You can then also use a balanced xlr cable from the DI to the desk which again will give you a better signal then a guitar cable.
