There should be an alternative to the current system, maybe some time hand washing Garda Cars, Driver Education, Volunteering in A&E, Community Service etc would have just as good if not a better impact on Road Safety.

I don't see how a cash fine or penalty points improves driver behavoir, an alternative should be offered so we don't end up with a situation like they used to have in the UK that too many people are being put off the road.

A constant inability to obey the Road Traffic Laws means they shouldn't be on the road, thats why they get put off.

I have no problem with the current system to be honest. I dont see how removing or lessening the threat of losing your license is going to make people take more care when driving.

One thing I would like to see is something like when you reach a certain number of points but before you lose your license, maybe 6 or 8 points, you have to attend a half day traffic school or something like that. Rather than allowing someone get caught 6 times with very little consequence before they get properly punished, an effort should be made to try and correct their behaviour after the 3rd or 4th time. If they still dont learn or change then they can continue to get caught and eventually face a driving ban at 12 points.
