Where to report illegal dumping of dead sheep?

Was out walking my dog in a local wood this morning and noticed that someone had dumped a dead sheep over the side of a bridge. It's not in the river, but is in a location where water runs down from higher ground into the river. It seems to be a popular dumping ground as there's a fair bit of household waste around the spot. I could only see one side of the animal's head and there's no sign of a tag on it.

There are no sheep in the immediate surrounds, and is highly unlikely that it just wandered down there and died.

Just wondering (besides the Co Council and the Gardai) who I should report this to?

Notify the council as they have responsibility for protection of water from pollution. They can notify the Dept of agriculture if it is warranted

Times are tough, and after the bail out from the Germans, it will get tougher. If I were you, I'd say nothing and bring it home and put it in the freezer. This time next year, when you are eating a skelp of it, you will be glad you did the sensible thing.

I'm not sure whether you're being serious or not- but for this unhelpful post, you have earned yourself a 1 week posting ban from this forum.

a good few years ago some one dumped 11 sheep and lambs on our land  we got the guards , local paper , council and dept of ag involved , never found out whose they where , but council disposed of them , they too where thrown in a drain with water flowing through it....

Thanks for the input guys. I reported it to the Gardai. They said they'd pass on the details to the relevant authorities. Hopefully it will be removed soon. Quite sickening, really, that people will continue to behave like this.

Curious as to what happened to them for that number to die.

We had something similar- turned out to be someone was dumping garden refuse into a field which included rhubarb leaves, and they got cyanosis from nibbling at it.

Without analysis it could be literally anything.....

i was quite young at the time.... but remember the smell:eek: wouldnt it have been easier to dig a big hole and bury them than to transport them and dump them.... on the rhubarb front all my aunts hens died after eating rhubarb:D

The only time a number of ewes & lambs died on us was in the shed. Numerous visits from three vets in a fortnight period told us SFA, postmortems included. We let them out and the problems stopped. That was a fair while ago though.

Some counties are better then others in dealing with problems of illegal dumping of all kinds. This spot sounds like a problem area made worse by the fact that its next to a watercourse/supply - the CC concerned needs to get the finger out and erect warning signs, mount a clean up and use the national dumping line to catch the scum responsiblie. If this was in my area I'd make such a fuss that the CC would have no choice but to act:);)
