08 car, buy now or wait till new year?

I'm looking to buy a 2008 car, but as it gets closer to 2011, I'm wondering if it's foolish to buy now. My reasoning is that in the new year, an 08 car will be a 'year' older. Purely psychological I know, but this may have a bearing on price. Also there are likely to be more trade-ins around at that time of year, so better deals to be had.

On the flip side, I'd be looking to trade in my car, so I'd expect to get a little less for it too, but it will depreciate less between now and then than a newer car.

Would you buy now, or wait? I ask because I've seen a few cars at the right price/right condition, and would consider going for them now.

Also a tangential question, would you pay circa 1500-2k extra for an executive pack i.e. leather trim, a few extra toys, or save the money for a lower trim but still plenty of kit? Not talking poverty spec for the more basic car, just lack of leather and foglights.

    Thanks

Sorry to hijack this thread, but kind of looking for the same info.

Also looking to buy a 08 - possibly VW passat estate, but wondering how much the price will drop in general between now and January.

Or, should I be able to negotiate the 2011 price now ??

    All help greatly appreciated.

I'd say your pretty mistaken if you think the prices will drop a lot when the year changes.

Prices garages pay for an 08 trade in next year will be lower than what they have them costing them now
Anyone pricing your trade in now will be pricing it at 2011 prices.

    I'd have the opposite view I'm afraid...(Budget tax increases/older car/fuel increases/less disposable income)

Not looking to trade in - just looking to buy. Would I save much in general in waiting 2 months ?
