Not even sure what this is called but is there such a thing as a degree in survival. i.e how does one become a survival consultant (as seen on Bear Grylls programme)

Check out Bears bio - I believe he did a stint in the british military, plus he was always a totally outdoors type. Same as Bruce Parry.

I cant imagine theres a degree in it, but certainly experience in outdoor pursuits coupled with some woodsman knowledge would help.

You can do outdoor survival courses, they are usually a day or two. I think Ray Mears does bushcraft courses AFAIK. I wouldn't call Bear Grylls a survival expert. Just look at that episode where he drinks water from camel poo...

Sound. I know Grylls was in the SAS, he was at one stage the youngest climber of Everest. On his show there are a couple of survival consultants listed in the credits. Just thought there might be a structured course one could pursue.

There could be leblanc - I never heard of anything like in Ireland though. You could email through Bears website and ask how to follow it as a career? There are a couple of email addresses on the contacts page.

Found this - short courses but its a start and you could get more info there from the instructors.

You can do qualifications in outdoor adventure/education. You know, like those dudes who help run the programme at Birr, Achill Outdoor Education Centres.

This is a bit of a hot topic ... In the UK there is a course that you can do that will certify you as a bushcraft instructor ... BUT ... who certifys the certifiers? Believe it or not under their own rules they could actually ask Ray Mears himself to pay up to be certified by these guys.

Be careful what you sign yourself up to in the Bushcraft/Survival world. My advice would be to do a bit of research on which schools are recognised as having the best instruction and go on as many of their courses as possible. After a while you might get offered a place on their team and maybe some years down the line you could open up your own school. People paying money for instruction expect to get it from experienced instructors. Having a certificate gives you qualifications on paper but it's the "dirt time" that will give you experience.

Good luck with it anyway ...

TBH if you want to be like Bear Grylls then simply give people exactly what they need to know to get themselves killed as quickly as possible in the great outdoors.

I don't know how you'd qualify somebody for this, I'd go with getting some kind of outdoor instructors qualification and then construct a course based on your own experience.

What, working in the local Holiday Inn? :D Old Gryllsy has a tendency to exaggerate his endurance skills somewhat hehe
