If it's the 1.8t in the Audi it will be more powerful than the 2 litre in the BMW...if you want something fast though I wouldn't consider either fast tbh

Of the 2, Personally I feel the 318 is a better drive. It is stiffer on the road but also feels more responsive.

The A4 is more forgiving (depending on alloys obv) it can be quite comfortable. Ive found Audi clutch pedals to sit alot higher, this makes it slightly uncomfortable on the ankle. This from 3/4 different Audis, others might have different experience.

I like the multi function steering wheel in the 318 the lack of it annoys me in the Audi. I do prefer the 1.8 T petrol engine in the audio over the 318 anyday.. It just really seems to have more (far more)

Between the 2.... I think the 2002 A4 styling has dated somewhat now. Prefer the E46 for styling. Coupes especially.

So in summation The E46 has a better driver feedback but the engine is lacking over the A4. Enjoy your decission.

Well it's not either of those! How would your insurance be on the likes of a Clio 182?

Well if you can stretch, get the 325. Huge difference.

Friend recently got a 320 Ci and even that was an improvment. The extra 2 cylinders make all the difference and also sounds much nicer. :D

It depends what you value. They're both slow, but the BMW will handle better. This is a double-edged sword, as IMO it only highlights the limp-wristed engine. In the case of the Audi, the 1.9TDI belongs in a tractor but it's reliable and a good bit more economical than the 1.8T. If I were 21 i'd have zero interest in either, but that's just me.:)

I can see the appeal to any 21 year old. tbh, perception or otherwise they both have good exterior styling. And lets face it the badge is the badge. Thats just the way it is.

Ok and which car would you choose then?

by speed do you mean which has more grunt ? because if you drive normal B road type stuff the Audi couldn't keep up to the BMW just because you couldn't hustle an A4 along at the same pace as a 3 series. The Audi may make up for it in poke ( engine dependant obviously ) though, but for me I'd rather an engaging drive that I didn't have to scrub off.

btw the Clio 182 would be a much better choice for a 21 yo ( provided you don't have chizzlers )

I'd hands-down take a Clio 182 over a BMW 318 at any age, and that's just off the top of my head.

if going for a 318ci, make sure its an 02 atleast, the engine received an extra 25bhp and better fuel economy from late 01 I think, I think air con is standard from all 02+ cars, mfsw is nice, so is leather, most wont have sunroof. If your in dublin, make sure you get car checked by BMW specialist, I would recommend AC car sales. M sports are much nicer looking, but you could simply buy a standard 318ci and get an msport bumper installed... I reckon a good 02 318ci is worth 6k max, my bro bought the chepest 02 on carzone last year from a Dublin dealer for €8500, they cheapest one now is under €5000!

Like you say, it'll be hard to find a good one. I think a good first step will be to get insurance quotes for a range of cars. I take it you've a few years NCB?

Op, given that I constantly check carzone, the below is an all rounder and is fairly prices, might be worth a look...

    http://www.carzone.ie/search/BMW/3-Series/318-COUP/201046200227203/advert?channel=CARS

One thing is for sure, purely on looks, that car will destroy the other cars being suggested! Also do the others have mfsw and climate control, leather?

That's a good start! Get out there and drive loads of different cars too, you'll be surprised at the differences between what you thought you'd like and what you actually like.

Also check out http://www.bmw-driver.net/ in particular the for sale section, some lovely 3 series' on there!

The older E36 I find very dated looking, personally...

Dont agree that the 1.8t Audi A4 isnt fast.Compared to an RS4 yeah its slow, but less than 1% of motorists have that kinda power.

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/1634809

The S line puts out almost 190bhp factory settings and the 1.8t is well known to go over well over 250bhp with ease, its very tuneable.

The S line with a decent custom remap will run 60's below 7secs, thats fast.
