Buying a new car - can't figure out the changeover!

    Hey all.

Won't be buying the new car until next year, but as usual I prefer to be prepared. Anyways, I can't get my head around the whole buying / changeover process.

My insurance is up August 19th 2011, that'll (fingers crossed) be my first years NCB. I'll be buying a Mazda RX8, which my current insurer (AXA) won't insure me on, so I'll have to change insurer.

Anyways, I use my current car (VW Polo) for work, but what happens with regards when to buy the RX8, when to sell my Polo, and what do I do with regards insurance on August 19th?
I can't be without my car, so do I insure the Polo until I sell it? And then what?

My family will probably buy my Polo off me straight up, so that's one handy thing.

Sorry if this post is a bit confused, I just find it a wee bit complicated! :)

    Cheers!

Just renew the policy on the Polo and when you get the RX-8 just ask the insurance company to transfer over the insurance to the new car.

EDIT: Probably wont be as simple as that tho coz the RX-8 is a performance car and insurance companies are a bit iffy over that kinda thing.

Aye that's the thing, AXA have said they won't take me on with an RX8 unless I've at least 5 years NCB, and I could swear they said at least 28 years old - so I'll have to switch companies. This is the part that confuses me.

You're assuming ANY insurance company will quote you at all. Do that first, then buy the car..........not the other way 'round.......

I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

    1. Get your quote for insurance on the Mazda.
(If you don't get a quote, then it's game over for now...)
    2. Purchase the Mazda (delivery after the date insurance on the Polo is up).
    3. Pay huge whack for new insurance premium, but tell your new insurer that you'll still need a few days insured on the Polo (that won't be a problem since it's a smaller engine).
    4. When you take delivery of the Mazda, call your (new) insurer to have the insurance transferred to that.

I have, 123.ie, and First Ireland will quote me anyways. Then there's the likes of Quinn, Britton, and XS Direct who will quote me but with silly excesses, so I will get insurance. I'll be 25, so age isn't too much of an issue.

Just because you're 25 doesn't mean you will definitely get insurance. The rx8 is a performance car, and 1 years NCB is very little to have for anyone driving a performance car. I've heard of people in their late 20's being refused insurance on cars like integra's and evo's (which would be in a similar performance bracket) with close on full NCB. Make sure you get a quote before buying one.

And if you can get a quote now, make sure you double check again before handing over any money for the rx8 because the quote will only be valid for a few weeks and insurance companies have a habit of changing their minds a lot.

Are you getting these quotes with zero NCB? You don't have an NCB till you finish the year, if you cancel half way through you get nothing.

+1, most quotes are valid for 30 days only. Make sure to check again before you buy and get a quote number or they could say no.

I was with axa aswell and when i changed to my current car they wouldnt insure me ( i had checked beforehand too) so basically i cancelled my existing policy with axa and got a refund for the amount i had 'in credit' for the rest of the 12 months (minus admin fee), got new policy with no nonsense and away i went

I'm giving my details as they will be next year - one year NCB, fill Irish licence for 2 years, age is 25, etc.
I won't be able to cancel my policy early as I'll need to finish it in order to get my 1 years NCB.
