    Hi Guys,
Tony from Pulse / Windmill Lane here. We’re setting up a monthly seminar in Windmill Lane Studios. This is open to everyone. The first seminar will be a quick, handy one. It will take place on Friday November 26 from 11 a.m. - -1.30 p.m It will be delivered by Chris Jinks from Apple.
The session is focussed around using 'the Mac as a Digital Audio workstation'
    Subjects will include:
    - Hardware configuration considerations
    - Software configuration for best performance
    - Infrastructure configuration for working with others
There will be a questions / answer session at the end

This is not just aimed at Logic Pro. It is under-the-bonnet stuff that relates to all D.A.Ws using a mac. (We are not just Apple – orientated, but this just happens to be the first seminar)

    A couple of points:

    1.It is free
    2. No, there is no sales pitch from us or whoever is delivering the seminar
    3. Sometimes the people who know a product best, e.g plug -ins, D.A.Ws, etc are the guys who make it. If the subject requires it, we will ask the companies to participate, but only to provide a product specialist to show us cool stuff and answer questions, NOT a salesperson!
    4. These seminars are not aimed at the absolute beginner. (It won’t be rocket science either....) We will exclude no – one, but to get the most out of it, you need to have some basics already covered.
    5. The seminars will loosely follow the following format:
    Time: Usually a weekday, 10 a.m - 4 p.m
    Place: Windmill Studio 1
We will have main topics to discuss, delivered by 1 - 3 experts.
At the end of the morning and afternoon sessions, there will be a questions / answers session. We would really like people to engage with this, as it encourages discussion / flow of ideas
Tea and coffee will be provided.
We are discussing numbers of attendees at the moment, and the cutoff point will be around the 45 mark.
We would be very grateful to receive suggestions from you guys regarding future seminar topics / content.

Also, any other cool stuff you want to know. I really believe in the attendees shaping the seminars by their questions.....
Future seminar topics are under discussion, and some subjects coming up will include:
    Pro Tools
    Recording / microphone techniques
    Mixing
Music Technology. We’re open to suggestions on this one. Probably needs a few seminars. I’m thinking virtual instruments, samplers, MIDI, etc. (I know we’re seen as more analogue recording, mixing types, but we’re pretty handy at this stuff :))
    Logic Pro
    Ableton
Studio setups – home studio acoustics, speakers, wiring, etc.
    Location sound
    Audio for gaming, film, animation

Again, if you have a suggestion for a topic, please let me know. Also, I’m well aware that there are some seriously knowledgeable guys here on boards. If you’d like to do a seminar, or part of a seminar, we’d be delighted.

There are a few reasons why we’re starting these seminars.
I have done many seminars before (Music Ireland, etc) and really enjoyed doing them. (I won’t be the main speaker at any of these seminars, but I may take a few short specialised spots). This planted the seed, and when we acquired Windmill Lane, friends within the industry suggested we do something along these lines. We’re passionate about music production / sound engineering. Like all of us here, we need to keep up with changes and new techniques. I will benefit greatly from this, so will our staff.
Finally, there’s this. And if this sounds corny, I’m sorry; but I believe it strongly: We started in a small room with a small rig. Most of us do. It was bloody difficult! (Still is…☺) If there had been seminars like this, it would have made our lives a lot easier! The openness I see here on boards, the community spirit, (the bickering…! :)) is amazing. People engaging in collaborations, pros offering well – considered advice,…….it's great for our industry.
Anyhoo , my commitments keep me away from the mixing console more than I would like, and as such, I get rusty and I don’t get to mingle with / meet new people in our industry as much as I used to. It’s great fun, and I look forward to seeing old friends and making new ones. This is a great way of doing it.
We'll try this out for a while and see how it goes....

Well guys, sorry for the long post. If you want to put your name down, just P.M. me. One thing I would ask though, is that if you do put your name down and then can’t attend please let me know. If I have to cap the numbers, I can offer your place to someone else.

    Cheers,

    Tony

P.S Woodsdennis: I remember you and I sneaking away from a session to go to a product demo and then tormenting the poor guy....if you get the urge this time, fight it dude:)

    good shtuff lads!
Nice to see the clarification on the commercial/selling stuff. Nothing worse than going to a seminar given by a door to door salesman.

    Hey guys,
Look forward to seeing you all there tomorrow. Kick - off is at 11a.m, so try and be there between 10.30 - 10.45. We'll have the coffee on!
There have been a few queries regarding Logic. This is not strictly a Logic seminar. It's more about how an Apple Mac deals with audio - all D.A.Ws are included. However, I am a certified Logic instructor, so if you have any Logic queries, I'll be happy to help.

    Cheers,

    Tony

Used to use ClicktoFlash but didn't like the barebones webpages you end up with.

This safari 5 extension wasn't mentioned today and is better solution in my opinion. Bypasses flash where possible any replaces it with an html5 player. Is proper gold, combined with an adblocker your computer will run a lot smoother than it used to.

Cheers for organising the session earlier Tony. Some funny questions in the Q&A, fair play to Chris for fielding Gmail imap settings questions! Was hoping to get a bit more down and dirty with the specifics of some DAWs but good to hear the workings of the audio from an engineers perspective. Will get more out of some of the upcoming sessions no doubt, but it's a great initiative all round cheers.

Dont use PT - But it looks as if it would be really interesting regardless of what you use.

Will try & see if I can make it.

    Anything pencilled in for August?

    Thanks Tony

    Hi ICN,
Yes...knowledge of one platform often helps with another. Also, Simon is a monster on other D.A.W.s, so he can make links and comparisons. For August, we're looking at 5.1 surround mixing. This will be divided into 2 sessions on the same day: Session 1 will be technical (dolby standards, speaker positioning, authoring, etc). Session 2 will be the actual mixing part; techniques, workflows, etc. We hope to have this organised for August, but it is the silly season, and we would be flying guys over from Europe to do it. If not August, it will happen in September.
    Cheers,

    Tony
