flush roof vent problems

    Hi folks,
we are currently roofing and I want to use a roof vent that is flush with the slates. I bought ones like the vents on the link below. My roofer who is fairly experienced and would be regarded as one of the best locally had never used them but was happy to put them in. They were only putting them in yesterday when they pulled them out. They said they were leaking and would cause alot of problems and to go and get a hooded vent. Anyone come across this before? Anyone used these vents and if so how are they? Do you have any problems with them? Perhaps they are being extra careful. We are situated a few hundred meters from the sea and the weather is fairly full on...
    Many thanks

If your roofer is advising you to change vent slates then I would follow his advice.
Strong winds can do funny things to water and blow it into places that you wouldn't think.
I have the external type vents on concrete tiles and they don't look terribly obtrusive.
I think it would be almost impossible for water to find its way into the vent on these it would have to travel up 1" and through a grille and then down.

thanks CJhaughey, the roofer is trying to figure out the best way to put them on as they are a different length to the slates and he wants to ensure that there will not be any leaks - so it seems the issue is with how to fix them on rather than the slates being prone to leaking... many thanks. tame1
