    Fair play to her!

Saw her at one of the squad sessions and she was burying whoever was paired with her! (all fellas by the way)

Must take an unbelievable amount of dedication and hard work to get to that level.

As a matter of interest, what is the standard of judo and numbers like in Ireland these days? I assume that Lisa competes in the UK and on mainland europe, as there used to be little to no competition in female judo in Ireland when I competed. Most categories only had 2 or 3 entrants.

    Well done to Lisa Kearney!

The details of the tournament can be found here: Competition results page.

Essentially she had two fights, a 19 second ippon win over Hannah Downing of New Zealand in the semi-final and a shido win during golden score over Bianca Ockedahl of Canada in the final.

The low turnout from EJU countries is probably down to the cost of travelling to Samoa compared to that of the many World Cup and Grand Slam events that are held in Europe. However Lisa Kearney has no control over who turns up for a tournament, she can only fight who is there on the day, so hopefully this marks a milestone of what is to come. :)

    Hi Makikomi

its Deirdre from the IJA office, not sure what happened with the link to the IJA website, here is the link to the report on Lisa Kearney's fantastic achievement: http://www.irishjudoassociation.ie/features/item/379
    GOLD Medal for Lisa Kearney
Ireland's Lisa Kearney became the first Irish Judo player ever to win an Olympic Qualifying event today (Saturday 13th November). Lisa, from the Yamakwai Judo Club in Belfast, won Gold at the IJF World Cup in Apia, Samoa. This latest performance follows an unprecedented run of successful results on the World Cup circuit since the London 2012 qualification period began back in May 2010.
Lisa has finished in the Top 5 in each of the last six World Cup events in Caracas, San Salvador, Miami, Birmingham, Rotterdam and Apia. Including Bronze, Silver and now Gold medals, Lisa Kearney will now travel directly to Abu Dhabi for her final competition of 2010.
The International Judo Federation (IJF) World Cup circuit determines the World Ranking List from which only the top 14 athletes in the world will qualify for the London Olympic Games in 2012. The Irish Judo Association & Yamakwai Judo Club would like to congratulate Lisa & her coaching and support team, we wish Lisa continued success in the coming months.

Its great to see Irish martial artists doing well on the world stage. How many points does she need to get to the olympics?

I've asked about this in both clubs during the week and couldn't get an answer, if/when I hear something I'll let you know of course.

The answer is it depends; the top 22men/14 women in the work go through automatically. After that each continental union has a quota, with a maximum of two per category, to fill from the top ranking athletes below the 22/14 mark. So you are in constant competition with your peers.

    Full details maybe found HERE
