Simple Sky Upgrade Question

I have a standard sky box and wanted to upgrade it to a Sky+ box
I rang Sky who quoted me €159 (€99 for the box and €60 for installation)

There were offers if I wanted multi-room (which I don't) or HD channels but I don't have a HD ready TV

    So... my question is this

If i buy a Sky+ box on e-bay can I just disconnect the current box plug in the new one, insert my card & work away or is it more complicated than that??

It will be possible, but you will only be able to record one thing at a time and won't be able to watch one program and record another.

To be able to watch and record or record two things at the same time, you need the LNB (sits on the end of the arm at the front of the dish) changed to a multi output one and a second cable run from the dish to the box.

    Thanks for the prompt reply

Would I be better then to cancel my Sky subscription and get a new connection in my OH's name?
Sky is currently in my maiden name?

I just hate the thought of forking out €159 it seems to be such a scam
Pity UPC don't have service around here :(

thats exactley what we did...cancelled in my name, installed in hers...simple, youre right though, all they want is NEW customers and screw the rest of us who pay them anywhere from 400 - 900 a yr

Ring them up, tell them you think it's too expensive and that UPC will do you a better deal (they won't know it's not available in your area) and that you want to cancel your subscription, I guarantee they will offer you a better deal before they let you cancel.

I am also interested in this. Am thinking for my Dad for Christmas I'll get the Sky+ in, we already have normal sky but he hasn't upgraded as it was too expensive for the box. What are the options? I don't fancy ringing up but would if I HAD to. Is the other alternative to cancel & sign up again in a new name? I kinda wanted it as a surprise and he might be a bit miffed if I cancel his account! :(
