    Hi,

I returned to my car at the Dublin Airport car park this week to find that someone had tried to steal it - slashed the soft top & I guess been disturbed in the act when the alarm went off. Since then I've heard of a few people whose cars have been damaged in there.

    Thought you should know.

Has it happened to any of you?

Who looks after the costs, your insurance or the car park? Did they rob anything from inside the car?

It would be his insurance company I guess. I don't see why the car park could be liable for the cost, it's not trading as a secure car park.

It is possible that it would be covered by the carparks insurance; you're paying to leave your car in a carpark rather than on a street somewhere in the assumption that it will be safe.

Still no harm to try; sometimes these disclaimers aren't worth the typeface they're printed in!!

After all, a new roof could cost €€€€, wheras a letter, even if they say no, costs maybe a euro including the stamp.

The only liability the car park would have is if they, their actions or negligence or their property contributed to the damage. They do not sell their service as being secure, therefore they cannot not be responsible for the actions of a 3rd party. Any assumption your car is particularly safe and secure is exactly that.

BTW. Their disclaimer does not protect them from their own negligence, the "however caused" bit is invalid.

Generally if you've paid for parking, the disclaimers are useless.

    Thanks guys,

No, nothing was robbed from within the car. TBH I hadn't considered claiming from the DAA. I'll research it.

From what I hear its a pretty regular occurence in the Long term. A mate returned from the states only this week to find his car broken into. It was an ancient wreck anyway but he had the sense to but a big chain on the steering wheel.

With the best will in the world nobody can watch every single car 24/7 in a car park that big. Its a big risk parking in a place like the airport car park. Im not saying that I dont feel sympathy for the OP or anyone who has their car broken into there, but thats the way it is as far as I see it; you are taking a risk leaving your car in a place like that long term.

That said, no harm to follow it up with DAA and see if they have any kind of insurance for this kind of thing.
