Toyota Corolla D4D vs. VW Jetta TDI

    Hi All,
I'm looking into a 2008 - 2009 small diesel saloon. Some of the needs: -
    • Price - 15k - 19k approx.
    • Economy - the bigger the better
    • Road tax - €156 or less
    • Cheap insurance
    • Reliable
    • Easy to service (can do most basic servicing - filters/oil/brakes etc.)
    • Decent spec (would like aircon)
    • 6 speed box would be nice (not available in the 2008/9 corolla)

At the moment I'm looking at Japanese or German. I'm not concerned with style/image/appeal.
The Corolla 1.4 D4D Luna fits the bill. However, I have also looked briefly at the Jetta.
Would prefer economy over performance but if there's better performance for the similar economy, I'd be very interested. The D4D is 90BHP, but I see the 1.9 Jetta is 105BHP. I'm not sure on the official consumption figures for each?
I'd also consider going a bit bigger (Avensis, Passat etc.) if economy was on the same scale.

Any help, information on either car, suggestions, comments?

    Cheers,

    DC

Corolla is low slung and not very big inside. Jetta is more solid feeling but corolla quite well built. Jetta better drive.

OR you could get a focus, you'll get an 09 with good spec no bother and the saloon has an enormous boot

THe focus is German too. Well, its built there, unlike the jetta witch is built in south Africa (so is the Corolla)

Also consider a Mazda 3, both it and the Focus are much better cars than either mentioned.
The only thing I don't like about the 3 is the numbness of the steering, though it, like a lot of modern cars, has electric power steering which robs all feel anyway.

    What about the Octy op.

Thanks for the responses so far.
Not too keen on the Focus to be honest.
I haven't seen any 2008/9 Mazda 3 diesels. Are they around?
    Octavia looks ok too.
I've been looking a bit more into it and the Jetta seems like a good option. All have air con as standard. There's also the 2.0 TDI 140 which doesn't kill the economy too much, judging by the figures.

Any other thoughts or things I should look out for?

    Cheers,

New Opel Astra should also be considered at, a newer design and alot prettier than the Jetta, Corolla or Octavia. 1.3 litre diesel is good on fuel and there is also a 1.7 litre diesel if you want more power:
