i bought a new car. the tax is up at the end of last month. why can't i just go online, pop in the reg and pay the amount o/s like i would with an eflow bill etc.

why do i have to wait for a new logbook and then send off a paper form to them?

is there some particular reason for this that i'm missing?

Because that would be an easy way of doing things and we irish hate when things are easy

i just don't get it. i really don't. tax serves no purpose other than to give the government money. i want to give them money. they're making it difficult.

and all the while i can't (in theory) drive the ****ing car because i'm waiting for xyz to be complete before i can do abc.

I bought a car 2 weeks ago - import from UK - was able to tax it online the following day - not sure what the problem is -did you not get a "thingy" to put on the windscreen to show the date of purchase. This covers if you are parked or for the Garda. Usually people crib because you have to pay tax - this is def a first!!

i don't like having to pay tax but i've accepted it. i'm just annoyed they make it so difficult. i bought the car from someone else at the start of november. the tax expired end of october. i couldn't renew the tax because it's not in my name. i sent off the change of ownership stuff and got the logbook back today (a week later).

i now have to print out a manual form (rf100a) from www.motortax.ie, fill it out, and send it off with the new logbook (the one in my name) to shannon to get my tax disc.

i'm just wondering why the process of taxing is so much effort. is there any legitimate reason why i can't tax a car that's not in my name? surely it's just a case of someone paying for it?

    it was a private sale.

I believe that if you ring the folk in Shannon (1890 411 412) they can give you a PIN over the phone which will allow you to pay the tax online. Have the VLC when you ring.

No need. As coylemj said, ring Shannon and you'll get the pin so you can tax your car on line straight away. Easier than you thought, what? :D

Hasn't the pin got something to do with the last few digits of the cars VIN or the like?

It's the first time you have to go into the office. Not much of a hassle imo.
Mind, when Ireland catches up to Germany etc in 2030 then everything can be done by computer.

Yes but only if it's brand new or recently imported i.e. this is the first time it has ever been taxed here in which case you can use the last six characters of the VIN as the PIN to tax it online.

Although the OP referred to buying a 'new' car he then went on to say that the tax expired in October so obviously it's a secondhand car already registered here.

bought in a private sale, previously owned. sorry, it was "new" to me.

They wont give you any pin over the phone I assure you. Best thing to do is get the pin of the previous owner and then collect the disk of them.

I wouldnt worry about it if the car is in tax.

Can you outline your experience in this regard, did you try and were refused?

The PIN is printed on the renewal notice which people tend to throw out once they have taxed the car and it isn't necessarily reusable a year later.

He said in the OP that the tax expired in October, he wouldn't have an issue if the car was taxed.

Even if they will give you a pin over the phone, why do you have to make a call to someone just so you can get a pin number so you can go online to pay them money. It should be buy your car, get home and put your reg number into the Motortax website and pay it there and then, none of this waiting around rubbish. It's easy to see why our public service bill is so massive with inefficiencies like this.
Think of how many Garda man hours are wasted on stopping cars whose drivers are waiting on logbook to tax it.

The seller should have the pin for this year but maybe they threw it out anyway. The VLC only takes a few days to process once its sent off.

I bought a car in august, vlc took three weeks. Tax was expired 9 months. I visited tax office without vlc and refused to leave, until they gave me their reasons for refusing to tax it in writing. I then presented this to the Gardai, who were threatening to confiscate the car.
Worse problem was getting nct. I made a test booking in august, earliest date they would give me was end of october. I could possibly have got an earlier date, if I went on standby, but my insurance co insisted they needed a test date, or no insurance cert.

Ring your local motor tax office, give them the reg, give them your insurance policy number and expiry, and give them you laser/credit card number and expiry.

Worked for me (Galway office; the staff in there are really helpful and efficient, in my experiences).

    Seeemples.

The pin changes every renewal letter.

Can you or someone you know not drop into a local tax office? It's mid month you'll be in and out in no time with the disc in hand.
