How much fuel does aircon consume?

I bought a Ford Galaxy 1.7 LX TDCi, and even though the dashboard display claims that I run at a constant average 40/41 mpg, when I actually calculated it myself I realised I was getting barely 35 mpg .

So I'm wondering would I get a noticeable improvement if I kept the aircon off?

I'll try it out anyway on the next fill, see if it's worth it.

It takes about 3mpg off my car, I know that - 1.9Tid Saab.

You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Thanks for that. Sounds like it could be a significant cost saving over the winter so ...

Now I'll have to take out the manual and see if I can figure out how to stop the aircon coming on automatically ....

Some nerve though, Ford, blatantly lying to the driver about the fuel economy he's getting ....

Most on-car fuel consumption calculators are overoptimistic - no idea why, they just are. Its not just Ford. The only accurate way to calculate your fuel consumption is to do brim to brim calcs, which it sounds like you've done.

The best way to decrease fuel consumption is to modify driver behaviour - the usual stuff, drive as smoothly as possible, anticipate traffic movement etc etc. Also, get rid of superfluous weight in the car, ensure that its maintained properly (tyre pressures, air filter etc etc). Decreasing your cruising speed by 10 kmh on the motorway can result in significant fuel savings. If you spend a lot of time in city traffic then its going to hit your fuel consumption hard, no matter what.

Its also worth keeping an eye on fuel prices - I noticed today that diesel was 8 cent a litre more expensive in Topaz on the N7 than in Newbridge - that's 4 euro difference for a 50 litre fill

If you don't need to use the air con then don't, but sometimes its a good idea. It needs to be run every couple of weeks so that the gas lubricates the seals. Also, it can help stop the car fogging up in winter which has obvious safety benefits, and, should you be driving at motorway speeds then opening the window will increase the fuel consumption over and above what air conditioning would have. Air con might also help to keep you more comfortable and more alert.

IMHO, you'll save more fuel by trying to drive more economically than you will by turning off the air con, but you could try doing both :D

Edit: bear in mind that if your car has a diesel particulate filter then it'll benefit from a good blast every now and again so that the DPF can regenerate - otherwise it might cost you more than a couple of euro saved on diesel.....
