Ok so I think I may have messed up ......... being the very novice self builder

bought shower trays and enclosures for 3 bathrooms early in the year. (sales) all very expensive low profile trays and one ultra low profile tray.

One of them the plumber wouldn't put in as he didn't like the shore drain. so we replaced with a bog standard tray.

One is going downstairs so not too concerned about that and it will have the least use.

Problem is the one we put in our main bathroom which will be used in the future by the kids. It is the lowest one and we have tiled around it already. The engineer doesn't like it and says we should have tanked. the plumber did tell me (to give him his due) about a diy tanking but there was so much going on I forgot and the tiler has now finished tiling the shower.

Question is How concerned should i be and is there anything i can do to remedy the situation now ? apart from ripping out the whole thing

    any advice greatfully received

Did you put a classic seal around the bottom of the shower?

Also belt and braces is always good but i've seen many showers installed previous and I can tell you its all to do with how well the first row of tiles is fixed to your shower tray (hopefully your shower had a lip around it at least) and the grouting. If old grout was used you will be in trouble - if new and a good tiler was used then you shouldn't really have any trouble.
Unfortunately there is nothing on the market to seal easily afterwards BUT there are products that you can paint on - they are clear and are used on guttering etc... to seal. Never used them but I'd guess they'd work.

If you are really worried then the only option is to redo now before usage

Are the walls block or stud partition in the main bathroom? I'm not a pro but have installed 3 showers in my own home. My experience is:

    - over time, Grout will permit water to get in behind the tiles
    - This will cause a problem eventually
    - if a block wall, the tiles will come loose, but wall itself should be OK
    - if Stud partition or WBP, I expect you will have problems down the line & will have to remove tiles & replace plasterboard/WBP.

I made a mistake myself with a shower (WBP, tanked, but I didn't seal it properly around the lip of the tray) and after 5 years I had to rip it out & reinstall. I know how to do it properly now!

This shower was used 1-2 times a day, every day. Also the ventilation there was poor so it was wet 24/7.

So, you might get away with it if the bathroom is well ventilated, and it is only used every 2nd day or so...

    HI thanks for the replies,

Mrgaa1, I don't know what a classic seal is so I don't know if i have done this?? I'm also interested in these products that could be painted on, do you have a name? I imagine it couldn't do any harm.

FoxT, it is a stud wall, the room though should be well ventilated as we have HRV going in. Also i put the moisture plasterboards behind it. The tray doesn't seem to have any lip really, there in lies the problem i think. I need to talik to the tiler i reckon and see what he thinks

    Thanks for help
