Best Mid Size Car available

Hi

Hoping I might be able to get abit of advice in the motor forum as I wouldnt know a massive amount about cars myself.

Currently driving a 1.6l petrol Toyota Avensis 1999. Its got about 230k miles on it at this stage and I'm thinking about possibly going for the scrappage scheme in 2011 if its still about. I want to change to a diesel car. I see Renault have said that they are going to run some kind of scrappage deal anyway.

Basically I like the size and the feel of the Avensis and would be aiming for a car of a similar size. I was looking on the Renault website and the Fluence model caught my eye. Anyone with experience? Also looking at the skoda website and they have afew models in the scrappage scheme.

My budget is probably around 20k including the scrappage reduction. Has anyone seen any other decent cars going in the scrappage scheme?

I reviewed the Fluence a while back and considering how much car you get for the money I quite liked it.

There are many on here who wouldn't go near a Renault and there have been lots of debates about whether you would have reliability issues and what the residual value would be like but there is a 5-year warranty and I'm guessing you keep your cars for quite a long time so residuals probably aren't going to be overly important.

You could have an Avensis (before the end of the year) for €20,995 under scrappage but that is a petrol model, which you probably don't want.

A Skoda Octavia 1.6D Ambiente (€20,940) would come under your budget under scrappage (again bought this year) and this would be a nice car.

There is the point that you could just spend the money on a decent second-hand car, as you will get 'something' for you trade-in. You could have a low-mileage 2009 large car of your choice really for your budget - like a 2009 Passat

For €20k you would get far better value in a good, low-emissions, used car from '09 or '10.
