and with the weather the way it is right now in Donegal i'm afraid that it's gonna snap it and cause major hassle then.

now i rang the ESB asking can they come out and see what the story is (and it is serious the cable is stretched and bends around the branch) and they said was i sure it was there cable i said i didn't know (rented property) and they said that if they came out and it wasn't theirs it would be 100 quid call out fee!

is there any easy way of finding out who i should ring or is there a coverall number that i can ring?

i'd ask the neighbours but they are away at the minute and the landlady isn't really sure

Not 100% sure if Comreg would cover it. But worth a shot.

If they do, they're extremely helpful.

Ring from a payphone then run away

Ring from a blocked number and give a fake name and address. Or say its a health hazard and if someone is injured by it it could cost them their job for negligence!

To expand on Phasers post, make sure to tell them of the problem before running away!

Does it look like an electrical cable? I ask because if so, is there any likelihood it could effect your own supply?
If thats the case, unplug anything sensitive to spikes or surges in your electrical current just for the time being.

PC, TV, even radio - batter safe than sorry.

Surge protectors folks. For the sake of a tenner, can save hundreds if not thousands.
    Belkin are the best ones!

i was thinking of that but then they'll probably think crank caller and ignore it, if i give an address in the area they'll probably check it and if valid bill it if not ignore it

have everything important (tv, laptop and sky) on a surge protector so not to worried about that.

tahts just it from 30 ft below it's fairly hard to determine what kinda cable it is

Yeah ESB are fcukers for that. Bout to ring them myself, no power, presume a line has been brought down somewhere.

Does the landlady not know anyone who might have an idea of where it's come from?

If you post a photo of the cable here (and the pole it comes from), someone will be able to tell you if its telecom or electricity

Crowd of jerks,do them a good turn and they want 100 quid.

Tell them it could injure the public and its really dangerous looking, make them act!

Could you not post a picture of the cable

For a public safety matter you won't get billed, and tbh, with the weather the way it is, ESB will be aware and vigilant of line drops anyway.

Can you post a pic here, and I'll tell you what it is?

If it turns out to be electrical, a call to the local area office will be a quick way of having the matter checked, and letting the local guys make the call as to whether it's likely to be a hazard in the medium term or not.

she said try neighbour because it's been years since she lived in the house and can't really remember and doesn't know if work had been done since

ESB are going to be up to their oxters with lines down at the moment so until the line actually falls they won't have the resources to attend.

    I'm older than Minecraft goats.

Say you might need to be in the look out for hurricane thomas OP! An exeperienced ESB electrician be the job to help you out, might need to call the firebrigade just to be sure everything be ok.

Do you have a long enough metal pole that perhaps you can poke the cable with? To errr... clear it off the branch...

That's not a great way to kill yourself. Jumping into an industrial sized blender filled with angry sharks AND scorpians would be a great way to kill yourself.

well seeing as the treads is going that way i'm gonna say trampline under the rotating blades of a helicopter

Climb up the tree and tug really hard on the cable until it is free. If it disconnects from anything touch the metal bit of your tongue to see if it is still live.

You can pick up your darwin award after.

haha ok ok probably should have made it clear, thats the track the wire goes through the TV so you can see that there is a serious twist/bend (you can't really see it but it also looks likes it's unravelling too

(and it was done in word actually =p)

And how pray-tell do the sharks and scorpions avoid the blender long enough to be effective hmmm?

1901 is the number you need to log a fault with eircom :) Can't really see a wire in that pic though, its kinda obscured with the orange lines you marked on it ;)

A cable? As in a poo? Hardly the remit of the ESB.

No, not really. No way a cable that small is a outside power line though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,659 ✭✭✭CrazyRabbit

Cut the cable and see what happens. I prefer the practical approach.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,572 ✭✭✭msg11

I wouldn't go cutting any Eircom lines. They would give you just as good a bang for your buck as the ESB lines.

The Eircom lines wouldn't be as high powered as the ESB lines. Still strong enough current to blow you out of that tree on your arse. Think there 48Volts DC , Pre Broadband push on the line!

It's a slow blender. More of a stirring motion. duuh!

Still won't work. Either the sharks will die from being out of water or the scorpions will drown.
