Can anyone tell me are nightvision scopes and monoculars illegal in Ireland?

Neither are illegal in Ireland but you need the Supers permission to use the NV scope when fitted to your rifle.

Does anyone here use NV scope?

I've never heard of anyone (outside of bodies like NPWS) getting permission to use a NV scope in Ireland. It's not illegal, but it's very Irish in that you need the Supers OK.

As for monoculars, if they can't be fitted to a gun or scope then they're fine. I have a Yukon Digital Ranger which has it's uses. One a night with the least moisture in the air you'd know a fox at 200 yards with extra IR I reckon.

With NV, it's often the movement of the animal that gives it away and not the eye shine like using conventional lamps.

Are you sure there not illegal Clive, because I was talking to a place in newry up in the north who sells nightvision gear and they said it was illegal in the republic of Ireland to buy it? If I went to my Garda station to enquire about it what do ya think i should say in order to get the permission from the super?

Kildare.17hmr I was actually looking at that laser genetics nightvision solution it looks impressive and would probably work but I think you can get it cheaper than that in the U.S. Theres a website called Opticsplanet.com they have every thing and brand thats got to do with hunting, shooting and nearly everything for the outdoors and they deliver to Ireland 2 so take a look at the website its excellent!! let me know what ya think

You can buy nightvision monoculars in most decent camera shops lad, like was said you just need permission off the super to use NV scope on your rifle. section 3.2 on the application- accessories- silencer and sights. sights refers to NV sights. I wouldnt be listenin to lads who dont live in ireland tellin me about whats legal here

Ill check it out lad, are ya sure they ship to ireland?

Two things about ordering from the USA which need some consideration. First one is having Customs charge you for it. Second being, if it's technical, how will you have it serviced if it goes wrong on you. Many European sellers won't give you the time of day unless you've bought it from them, which is fair enough.

Johngalway I didnt mean techical stuff, have a look on the website you will see what i mean about what they have like they do scopes/spotting scope/rangefinders targets/binos/ and much much much more believe me it really is worth a look!!

Kildare.17hmr yes they definitely delivery to Ireland, they have it on there country list during the checkout stage when ordering and I have even emailed them to ask and they confirmed that they do and they also have a few different mailing options to choose from i think the cheepest to ship to Ireland would be around 36-40 dollars depending on the product size and weight but they have everthing you could possibly want for huntng and shooting etc. let me know what you think of the site if ya get a chance to look at it and you can also go through the check out stage and see how much would the shipping cost without having to buy the product

As the lads said its completely legal to buy them. Most camera shops sell them then there are the speciality shops such as Night Vision Ireland that deal almost exclusively in them.

    My apologies, i should clarify.

I have never bought from or used the company, i merely mentioned/linked it to show they (NV gear) are available to buy here. As said before you can have the products in Ireland, but licensing for the equipment is a must if the product is to be mounted on a firearm.

it doesnt look likre they do nightvision riflescopes

Are you looking for NV goggles/monocles or for an NV Riflescope?

As the lads have already posted above, you will have to apply to your Super for authorisation for a NV Riflescope, which IMvHO I would be very surprised if you were authorised to own and / or use.

What are you planning to use this for? Would a NV monocle or a good lamping set-up not do the job equally well?

Im looking to get a Tikka t3 super varmint soon in .243 for target and deer shooting and I was planning on gettin either between a nightforce, nikon or burris scope but the nightvision scope I was looking at was the atn ps-22 converter which attaches to the objective of the day scope and turns it into a night scope in seconds with out the need for re-zeroing and it turns back to a day scope just by removing the atn ps-22 which clamps on to the objective lens.

I currently own an Anschutz .22 lr rifle in semi auto matic. Great bunny basher!!!!

Ah yeah that would be nice alrite! I dont really get the need for the nightvision tho, a decent lamp is just as good and if your lampin alone id recomend a LED LENSER P7 with the scope mount, gettin great results with one on my .17hmr

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 114 ✭✭niteowl84

well if i get a lamp it would probably be the laser genetics nd3 or the cluson masterlite supreme with scope mount not sure yet!

A night vision set up for a rifle scope with out being illegal (correct me if iam wrong) and a LOT cheaper,

A cheap Sony cam-corder off ebays with Sony nigh-shot rigged up to your scope and a IR lamp rigged up for more range.

Easy, cheaper and you can record your killshots!:)

Sorry skipz, still illegal without permission, the legislation is about what the sight does, not how it's made.
