Not sure if this is the right thread, last Christmas I fell on the ice and injuried myself quite badly, was wearing flat boots at the time. Can anyone advise me what are the best type of footwear to wear in the icy conditions in case we have a winter like last year. Are wellies any good?

I don't know about the right kinds of shoes to wear, but i've always found wellies to have rubbish grip and also because they're just plastic they tend to be really really cold.

i would imagine a good hiking boot from a decent willwalking/ outdoorsy type shop would be your best bet.

For very little money you can walk in relative safety

Do a search on ebay, I picked up a pair for just over €8 a few weeks ago.

The best way to avoid falling all over the place is to change your style of walking. I know that may sound crazy, but it does work.

Instead of taking normal sized steps, you need to shorten them slightly and walk with a slightly flat foot (i.e. don't put your heel to the ground first). Yes, it will feel (and probably look) quite odd, but it definitely works. I survived the big freeze in Hunter wellies and didn't fall once!

Regarding what shoes/boots to wear: Unless you've got something like hob-nailed boots you're probably going to slip. I wore hunter wellies all the time in the snow, and they worked fine. Certain types of runners can be good, too (I wore sketchers on New Year's Day), and these (while, perhaps, not the prettiest) were really good and kept my feet nice and warm and dry.

I always say that if you hit a patch of ice, you'll nearly always fall!!

I broke my ankle last winter so I invested in these:

They have good sturdy soles so hopefully they'll be no accidents this year!

I have a pair of penney's fake uggs, they're from like 6 years ago and haven't seen em since. They have a really heavy wide base and lots of groves, I was down the country last year for new years walking home oh country ice roads each night and i didn't they were amazing.
I would second the whole concept of walking differently, you really can't rely on friction that much to keep you upright when there's that kinda whether.

A few of my mates (guys & girls) swore by their Docs last winter too.

I also second the different walk technique!

Uggs (the real ones) are very warm but have very little grip so avoid those if you're worried about falling. I got a pair of Nike snow boots in NYC last year, they are amazing.

all depends what kind of style you're after, maybe "style" won't even come into it once the snow hits us! For instance DM's just wouldn't do it for me.

    I'm going for these

    http://www.emuaustralia.com/shop-women-single.asp?ProductID=U10028

as mentioned in the "boots to keep warm" thread, proper sole, not squishy foamy sole, proper grip, proper sheepskin to keep warm, all round winner for me.

But I suppose the most important thing is to be careful in the snow and ice, as much as you can be anyway :)
