Speeding charge from Spain

I got a speeding fine from a fixed camera in Spain while driving a hire car in September. I didn't know anything about it at the time but a registered letter arrived this morning. (Normally, I never collect registered letters as they only bring bad news but I was home when the postman called.)

Anyone know what happens if I don't pay it ? I just assumed that the car rental company would have charged me. Presumably my name and address was obtained from them.

    scam imo

I'd be eligble for another speeding ticket with the speed that that letter would be thrown in the bin

Nothing if it was my own car but it's a hire car so you normally sign an agreement allowing the car hire company to charge any traffic fines to your credit card.

doesnt seem to have happened tho or they wouldnt be sending you the fine. maybe email the company who own the car and ask?

I'd be onto the hire company, and seeing what they say

how is the fine to be paid? visit a website (dgt.es or the like), or just pay into these bank details?

Yes it says the fine can be paid at dgt.es. €100.

I have limited Spanish but from what I can make out it doubles if not paid within 20 days.

I wonder would there be consequences again for you if you don't pay it and you happened to be pulled over by the police if you were ever driving in Spain again?

Thanks. I just did that now, still not 100% sure if I'd pay it but when I entered the fine reference number it was reduced to €50 for prompt payment.....so I decided Feck it, I'll just get it over and done with for the sake of 50 quid. I'm likely to be driving in Spain again in the future so don't want my license number popping up. There's also the risk that the fine will grow and ultimately the hire company will take the cash from my credit card.

    Thanks all.

Prolly better in the long run.
Aside from the police you might get blacklisted by the car hire firm.

+1, karma aside it's really not worth the potential hassle for €50.

IIRC they can let the fine rack up and then sell it to an Irish debt collection company.
