    Finally...

In the Irish Times Breaking news
    Ryan appointed Tipp manager
GAA: Declan Ryan has been appointed the new Tipperary senior hurling manager on a two-year contract, succeeding All-Ireland winning boss Liam Sheedy.

Ryan, a winner of All-Ireland senior hurling medals in three different decades, will be joined on the management team by former Hurler of the Year Tommy Dunne and Thurles Sarsfields’ back-to-back county championship-winning manager Michael Gleeson.

Gleeson will remain with Sarsfields until their participation in the Munster and All-Ireland club competitions comes to an end.

“I think we have gotten the best three available men in the county,” said county board chairman Barry O’Brien this evening. “I compliment them for their bravery in taking on the job at a very tough time with Tipperary at the summit. They all have a long history of action in games and coaching.”

Maybe it's just me, but if I were one of the older guys on the panel I wouldn't be sure if I could sit with the idea of knowing that I regularly played and trained on the same team as two of the three selectors. I know some of the Waterford players have talked about the strangeness of looking at Davy Fitz as their new boss when he arrived, and that was after only playing on the odd All-Star and Inter-Provincial team. If somebody like Paul Flynn or Fergal Hartley suddenly came in to coach us then there'd definitely be questions raised.

But obviously Ryan and Dunne have far more experience at coaching already, and I'm sure Kelly, Corbett and Cummins etc will be able to look past their playing days. It's just something I'd keep in mind.

Dont think it should make a difference really as long as they have respect for the fella. In fact in waterford bringing in managers from rival counties who they've played against/despised has only created divisions in the dressing room. If we had an in-county manager this last decade we may well have had an all ireland

Ah I don't think it'll be an issue for the likes of Kelly, Corbett & Cummins as they are probably have the best attitude of all the players on the panel. The younger players of the team would have grown up looking at Dunne & Ryan playing for Tipp and many of them would have played at either Minor or U21 with them.

I think this is the best coaching team possible for Tipp. They have proven to be successful at minor level (and tommy at u21) and I think they will have the immediate respect of all of the panel.

The only problems I could see would be the situation with Benny Dunne being coached by his brother and potentially Glessons son being called up to the panel but I don't think they're major issues.

Well some would argue the west/city divisions in the county could've had the same effect, but that's for a different thread :)

I'm not doubting the older guys ability to give the lads the respect they deserve, it's just something I've always looked at with caution and not just in GAA.

well I know that if I was a Waterford player, I would be more inclined to listen to and respect a manager who wore the Waterford jersey before me. Not some false money-media driven ego maniac who secretely wants you to lose..;)

Again, Waterford thread is that way :)

Back on-topic, what kind of record has Michael Gleeson? Obviously he's done excellent with Thurles Sarsfields and it sounds like he has a fair bit of experience which will be needed.

A good appointment for tipp.Declan Ryan replaced Liam sheedy as mnor manager in 2007 and went onto win the all ireland that year so its a progression of sorts.

I wouldnt think that hurling with corbett, kelly and cummins will be much of a problem because ryan was in his last year when kelly and corbett joined the panel and cummins would be first choice keeper regardless. There isnt that much baggage involved.
