Broken screen on Samsung Galaxy S

    Hi guys.)

The unthinkable happend tonight, whilist walking into the living room this evening, I found out (the hard way) that the galaxy is no match for a sokid oak floor!

The screen is completely gone, its not smashed mind, more like gone all multicoloured as if a liquid is running through it.

Luckily I never sold my 3gs and have now popped my 3 Ireland sim card into it.

    Few questions though,

1, anyone know how much it would be to repair a broken screen?
2, anyone know where to bring a broken screen for repair (without voiding warranty)
3, is it worth while doing this via a 3 store with my insurance, or should i take a hit on it and pay it myself if it works out a good bit speedier?

As usual guys, thanks in advance!

If you're paying good money for insurance why not claim?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,593 ✭✭✭theteal

chances are that the warranty is void now due to physical damage so it doesn't really matter what repair shop you bring it to. if you're in dublin i can recommend fmmobiles

how much is the excess fee should you claim on your insurance policy? i think this would be your best option tbh

    Ah ffs!

Just called three to discover I'm not insured!!!
I thought it would switch automatically hen transferring from o2 to 3, tried to insure the phone this evening for any 'future' mishaps. They won't insure unless the phone is 30days old or less.

Can you tell me where fmmobiles is please mate?

I'm based in the Naas/south Dublin area, but will be in the docks area in the a.m with a client.

    Thanks

they've a shop on georges street (just beside the arcade) and a shop further up on aungier street. i tend to go to them as they're relatively cheap compared to other places

they have a map and contact details on the web site (which isn't working at the moment)

you might just want to check they can do a galaxy screen as they are still relatively new. . .and samsung themselves are starting to run low

if you're in south dublin, there's also MPRC in sandyford but they can be expensive

MPRC can be expensive you say? Lol, thy just want 170 of my hard earned cash, WITH a 15€ handling fee if I bring it in rather than post it in?

This should be in rip off Ireland! Thanks mprc , but if you think I'm paying 185 to you shower of robbing hures you have another thing coming!

Prob explain why they are advertising looking staff each week on job websites lol!

How much should a Galaxy screen cost to replace?

    Well, put it this way.
One place quoted me €100 (week delivery)
Another quoted €120 (repaired sometime next week)

Mprc quoted the guts of 200 and five working days, rip off merchants!

Nokia repair shop in Cork mentioned 60€ to me 2 weeks back when I asked them about screen repairs on different phones, was checking reliability before buying a smartphone

€100 is an excellent price! Rememeber it's a Super AMOLED screen which is going to up the price a bit.

You could go the DIY route.

Throw up the details there, somebody else might need them later. I just hope it won't be me. ;)

Guys, just an update on the broken screen.

£59.99 sterling, repair done overnight (well if you have parents in the north like me :D) as they need a uk post code to do it overnight, otherwise inside five working days to Ireland.
Makes me a bit suspicious of the Irish 'repairers' now tbh, how come they need €100-185 and it takes them five working days also???
Prob sending it off to these guys lol!

I suppose Im lucky in the sense I have a northern home address to provide, so they will have my phone on Monday coming, my parents will have it next day, and I will receive it Wed!
For anyone else in Ireland, looks like a five day turnaround max!

    check out these guys

that price versus mprc in sandyfords 185euro is a joke!

    @Gucky,

Will you keep us updated when you get the phone back, i.e. was it repaired and is now functioning properly etc.
Just in case the unspeakable happens to my Galaxy S and to know if that company in the UK is any good.

    Thanks

    Will do!

I have sent my phone via courier today, so they should have it Monday (couriers through work for free)
I expect my phone to be back in my hand by Wednesday/Thursday at the latest!

    Phew :)

Someone can recommend/and or has used before.
Have to admit I was slightly worried enclosing cash (I just happened to have a few bob in sterling in my top drawer)

Will be back to let you all know how it went!

I presume it's the super amoled screen, as that is what's on the phone as an OE part.
If you look at the link, it does show an original screen with samsung written in the top of it, and afaik, it's illegal to display a pic of an original part , displaying the brand name if that's not what's being fitted (I sell spare parts for a living and that rule definitely applies to me)

You have me worried now mate!

I see Super Amoled screens on ebay now for £44 so maybe it is SA.

    Lads, an update as promised.

Phone back in my hands after 6 days in total (would have been 4 days only I sent on a Friday)
Screen is a brand new genuine samsung AMOLED screen as per original.
Price was 63.98 in sterling (just over 70 euro)

All in all delighted with the service, was emailed when they received phone, emailed to tell me phones work had been carried out and tested, and finally emailed to inform phone had been dispatched with a royal mail tracking number.

Over 100€ cheaper than mprc's quote of 185 in Sandyford!!!!

All in all, very happy customer here! :D

Probably a bit late not Gucky, but when your with 3 and break your phone it's 50 to get it repaired. It's a fixed charge only with 3 & Fonemenders.

Phone wasn't insured drunk (fluckin stupid I know)
    would that have mattered?

A similar sad story has happened to me - a Dublin Bus rolled over mine. Surprisingly it seems its only the screen that got destroyed.

Is fonemenders the cheapest way to go, and does the 50 euro repair limit apply to all 3 customers, or just the ones with insurance? Obviously a screen sounds like it would cost far more than that! :(

    Holy crap !!!!
You should have taken a video and sent it to Samsung. They would have paid you lots of money to advertise how tough the phone was.
Buses are heavy. A fat chick will not do the same damage.

    I don't know tbh.
My phone want insured with 3 (or anyone else) nobody from three mentioned this to me when I spoke to them on the phone, phone menders quoted me 120 (but the bloke at the front desk told me I had been under quoted) but the REAL killer for me was the expected 10 working day return time they expected, plus the fact they never (not once) returned a call when they said they would.

Just to point out that the 50 euro limit does not apply to Smartphones. So said a 3 Store today. Fonemenders want 150 euro (or more) and said it would take a couple of weeks.

I'll look into the UK option - thanks Gucky.

    No probs mate.

Be sure and do what I did though, send fomemenders a snotty email, pointing out theyre blatant over pricing, and (in my eyes) suspicious repair times.

Takes them coupke of weeks for 150 quid?

My bets is theyre sending this to the lads in the uk themselves!

I'm tempted to send my phone to these guys for repair but the web site worries me. There are a lot of basic spelling mistakes and I've just received an "Email Varifaction" mail to confirm my account for placing the order. has anyone other than the op (Ghandee) used them?
